Eastern Conference notes: Attendance up-and-down game early in the season
Forget the Falcons. Yo, Deion! The Hawks need you.
Whatever basketball knowledge Sanders may or may not have doesn't really matter. Just the arrival of his enormous posse, otherwise known as the God Squad, should help bolster a team that is in serious need of fan support. In its home opener, Atlanta drew a little less than 19,000 to the Philips Arena, but few fans were there just to watch the Hawks. After their overtime defeat, celebrities such as singers Brian McKnight and Nick Carter and actor Morris Chestnut participated in a charity basketball game. Without the lure of movie stars and famous musicians, the Hawks announced a crowd of 5,683 for last Monday's game against New Orleans.
"There weren't 1,500 people in the arena," said a courtside observer. "It was so bad, they moved fans who were sitting up top to the lower bowl, and it still looked empty."
The paltry showing in Atlanta isn't indicative of the NBA, but after a week of play, attendance is reportedly down while television ratings are soaring.
Portland is also feeling the sting of fan apathy. The Trail Blazers had their smallest crowd in franchise history on Wednesday, when 14,634 watched their 93-87 victory against Memphis.
Other cities, however, are undergoing a hoops revival. When the Sonics played at Gund Arena last season, the building was so empty that you could hear a fan from the upper deck who yelled "Hey, Gary!" during the game, and Payton shouted back, "What?"
This season, the Cavs drew a sellout crowd of 20,562 for their home opener.
Cousy gives financial assist
Bob Cousy plans to auction off numerous items from his collection, including title rings and his 1957 MVP trophy. Cousy, 75, isn't bankrupt but wants to help out family members.
"I was never one to go down there (to his basement) and say, 'Gee, isn't this wonderful?' " Cousy told the Boston Globe. "... My daughter Marie and her husband Bruce are both high-school guidance counselors (in Seattle). They have been very productive members of society. But now their daughter Carol is headed off to Santa Clara at $40,000 a year, and they'd have to go in hock just to send her there."

Sister of celebrity Carters stopped, charged with DUI!

MARATHON -- A Marathon woman was apparently tired of being known by her famous name, and decided to pen something a little more graphic when she was arrested on a drunken driving charge by Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies Wednesday night.
Bobbie Jean Carter, 21, was stopped on U.S. 1 near 92nd Street in Marathon after a motorist flagged down Deputy Joel Slough to report a vehicle seen "driving all over the road."
Carter, a local hair stylist, is the sister of pop recording stars Nick Carter and Aaron Carter.
According to sheriff's office reports, Slough followed Carter, the driver of the car, and observed the vehicle weaving and following another car too closely on the highway.
Slough stopped Carter in the vicinity of Key Lime Lane, and requested her driver's license, registration and proof of insurance.
Carter reportedly handed over her driver's license and asked, "Why do you guys always have to mess with me?"
According to the deputy's report, Slough smelled a strong odor of alcohol and asked Carter to perform three field sobriety exercises. She complied, but was unable to follow directions to complete the tests. She was placed under arrest for DUI.
Deputy Alice Cervantes arrived to perform a pat down on Carter, when Carter reportedly began to hyperventilate. Paramedics were called to transport her to Fishermen's Hospital.
While at Fishermen's, Carter reportedly became agitated and had to be restrained by emergency room staff and the officers when some confusion arose over whether or not her blood was to be drawn. Carter continued yelling, Slough noted, after the hospital staff "quickly retreated" and the deputies "backed away".
She did submit to and failed a breathalyzer test.
Carter was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center in Marathon, where she was issued citations for DUI and following too closely. She was further issued a written warning for failure to carry and exhibit registration upon demand, and for not having proof of insurance.
Apparently unhappy with the citation for following too closely, Carter signed it with a choice expletive, F***, instead of her name. After being cautioned by Cervantes, she then wrote her signature over the first entry.

TV's hunky carpenter misses hometown hugs
By RICHARD L. ELDREDGE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If only all the calls into Buzz Central were like this. On Friday afternoon, "Trading Spaces" carpenter Ty Pennington rang to inquire if we'd knock off early in order to quaff a cold one at one of his local hangs, the Prince of Wales pub in Midtown

A star-studded court
After seeing the Atlanta Hawks lose in overtime Saturday night at Philips Arena, it was a refreshing change to watch folks on the court who weren't playing because of a $22 million contract.
Flex Alexander of UPN's "One on One" and rhythm-and-blues singer Brian McKnight came to play ball in a post-game celebrity matchup. If there were MVPs, Alexander and McKnight were it. Alas, Atlanta music producer Jermaine Dupri was definitely on the wrong court. He missed several shots but kept his game face on.
And after shooting several air balls, rapper-actor Bow Wow could have used his shoes from the movie "Like Mike." Actors Larenz Tate, Bill Bellamy and Morris Chestnut, and Nick Carter and Brian Littrell of the Backstreet Boys, were all great assets to their team.
"American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard gave an impressive performance during the halftime show, when several fans waved "I love you Ruben" signs. While he appeared a tad nervous during his first song, Studdard soared through his hit single, "Flying Without Wings."
