An article of andre Csillag <- the OFFICIAL photographer of The Backstreetboys
Thursday 19th: Shanghai - Manilla
We left a cold and wet Shanghai for Manilla. Luggage call was at 6:30 am and we departed the hotel at 7:00 am. (Of course the luggage vans were too small to accommodate all of our stuff.) The immigration leaving China took 45 minutes, the bus ride to the plane took 10 minutes.

As we all traveled together, band, crew and Boys, things go wrong at the airport when some of the luggage only got checked in to Hong Kong. Our fearless leader (Tour Manager Dave Brown) gained a few grey hairs in the process of trying to sort everybody out. The plane from Shanghai was late arriving in Hong Kong, we had to queue some more to get our boarding cards to Manilla. All fun and games.

We arrived at the Manilla airport to total chaos. The airport employees mobbed the boys and the immigration people were too busy taking pictures with their mobile phones to care about stamping our passports. Some of us walked straight through and had to send our passports back from the minibus to have them stamped.

Our journey to the hotel was also crazy. We had a police outrider but the traffic was so bad that we drove for miles on the wrong side of the road and it still took us over an hour to get to the hotel.

Since the hotel is above a mall, everybody went to check it out while waiting for the rest of the travelling party and luggage to arrive. They didn't join us until two hours later!!!

Tomorrow is a long and busy show day, followed by yet another travel day. Andre

Last Boy Band Standing

Before Westlife won (and later bored) fans with their remakes. Before Taiwanese import F4 charmed and charged Filipino fans 10k for front-row tickets. Before Brit quartet Code Red made popsters laugh out loud with their dance steps... there were the Backstreet Boys.

Thanks to Howie, Kevin, AJ, Brian and Nick, music in the '90s will be remembered not only for the head-banging fellas from Seattle (Nirvana, who else), but also for the suave singing and dancing by the pretty boys who dominated the scene during the latter part of the decade.

It was the Backstreet Boys, or BSB to fans, who pioneered the era of manufactured boy bands and pop acts.

And since the boys really made it a point to set their band apart by insisting it was "all about the music," they would sometimes perform a capella just to prove they had the voice to back up their looks and marketability. Their efforts paid off since, it seems, they are the last band standing (read: Complete Five original members).

Flashback

The boys came to Manila for the first time in October 1996. This was the time baby-faced Nick Carter had long hair (and a neck!). The boys wore matching ensembles and their fans religiously subscribed to the popster bible, Smash Hits.

The boys were also relatively unknown in the United States, their homeland, but were already certified superstars in other parts of the globe, the Philippines included.

They performed at Limits Disco, and I still remember that day clearly. I rushed to Megamall to get their autograph. My cheek got scratched after a minor scuffle, and Howie Dorough promised me they'd be back soon.

I was expecting a concert the following year, but of course, we all know what happened to them afterwards.

Superstardom

They finally hit it big in the US two years after they had made a mark in other continents. They topped the Billboard charts, sold millions of albums, got numerous awards and Grammy nods, dealt with lawsuits and came out with a greatest hits album in 2001.

Some members got hitched, Nick Carter released a solo album. The group also dealt with bad press, such as AJ McLean's alcohol and cocaine addiction.

But like many loyal fans in Asia who up to now still argue with N*Sync fans, sympathized with AJ McLean when he entered rehab, and hated a certain hotel heiress for romancing Nick Carter, I was still wishing to see them perform live for the second time.

Comeback

The boys have made a comeback. Five years after their last studio album, the Backstreet Boys released "Never Gone" last June and announced a world tour.

So last Jan. 20, fans packed the Araneta Center; they ranged from those who had braces and baby fat to the older set (many of them still fat and overweight), all pining for their favorite Backstreet Boy.

Though the show was far from the usual million-dollar production that characterized the band during their "Millennium" tour, the energy inside the coliseum was high.

The fans didn't seem to care that the boys were dressed like their brothers, which is a far cry from the tailored suits and silk shirts they had worn during their peak.

The boys performed a total of 21 songs, and the audience sang along to numerous hits such as "All I have To Give" and the songs from the group's latest album, "I Still."

Nick introduced his "girl," which turned out to be a guitar, and played "Climbing the Walls." He gave a mean rock show with "Just Want You to Know." Kevin Richardson played the piano when he concluded the set with "Never Gone," which he had written in memory of his father. The encore, "Backstreet's Back," fitted the band's current momentum.

Backstreet to the future

In a press conference, the boys mentioned their plans, which were mostly personal. They talked about solo albums, a gospel album, venturing into acting, developing artists with their respective production companies. Still others talked about establishing a lupus foundation and embracing fatherhood.

As much as fans wished them the best, many were worried it might take another five years to release a studio album or worse, "Never Gone" might be their last.

But personally, pardon the cheese, the Backstreet Boys have already made their mark in pop culture-surviving the business, touching lives and growing up with their fans. We just have to wait and see.

So being a fan, yes, I'm hoping for a follow-up to "Never Gone" and another concert even if it's going to be 20 years from now.

"Backstreet's Back, all right!"

|01.27.06| MY BSB Encounter Story!

~Meeting Brian and Howie was'nt on my plan at all, I was @ the meeting then I'm about to go home when my bro. in law insisted to take me out and have dinner together with my sister (we had a fight just last month and wer still not talking that time), so I went. But before I left the office, I saw the news that The Backstreetboys already arrived in Manila, I'm so psych to see them on TV so the second thing I know is that I'm on the car with my bro. in law and i was asking him to see the boys on their hotel, I txted my good friend Steph to ask where will they stay...and she txted back with GALLERIA SUITES/HOLIDAY INN. My bro. in law says that he was sure bsb will stay @ Holidayy Inn (acc. to him, it was an american hotel), is it fate that brought me on that street? because that time when the car was heading off to my Sister's facial session, the way is actually to where Holiday INN was located.I'm just quiet that time, I'm excited to see the boys especially Nick..So we went in the hotel but because my bro. in law was hungry he immediately look for a resto, no buffet available so we switched at another hotel which was the CROWNES PLAZA, this hotel is in the middle of the 2 hotel, I was so angry because we will not eat @ Holiday Inn, so ok, It was cool, wer on our way to 7seven corners (i'm hungry too)...we went in, ask for how much per head and waaah! it was damn expensive! 1200 bucks for a dinner. no way! so i sat @ the couch outside txting my good friend, Erik Santos enters the scene, maybe he was having a stage performance @ the hotel conference somewhere, he's cool (gay like)...:p anyways when my sister arrives we went in and im asking her to plz can we ate @ holiday inn, but its over...my bro. in law already pick up the food.So i sat up, aim for fruits first and when i turn around, Brian Littrell was holding a "people r people goody bag" and sat down at the next next table from us, Im so shocked seeing him. Omg! what's happening i told my sister, my bro. in law was laughing, he told me...i told you to calm down....and so i saw howie at the sushi bar, said hi and he replied with a cute smile "hello", my sister ask where is Nick and he said "He's just dressing up, wer expecting him to be here"...After like 2 hours, they wer full and so I grabbed the opp to ask if I can take a pic with them, and they did...they're sooo normal, they're so true, they're my backstreetboys!

|Dec. 3| From Boys to Men

What do you do when you're a has-been superstar from the 1990s boy band era? 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake used his appeal to launch a solo music career. And 98 Degrees' Nick Lachey married Jessica Simpson, got a reality show, "The Newlyweds," and then the couple split - creating even more buzz.

If you're Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean, Howie Dorough or Kevin Richardson, however, you cross your fingers, say a couple of prayers and record another album.

And they've done it, after a five-year hiatus. The boys are back. They'll perform Sunday at the KISS 106.1 Jingle Bell Bash at the Tacoma Dome. Thus, a re-introduction - in their own words - to the Backstreet Boys.

Nick Carter: The Heartthrob

During the hiatus: He released his debut CD, "Now or Never", in 2002, tour extensively and gave a try at acting in movies.

Why the band took a hiatus: "We'd been on eight years of touring nonstop over in Europe and all around the world, and it was just time to take a break. We needed to take some time to ourselves."

How they got back together: "I had gotten a call from Brian, and he was saying how AJ was doing a special on 'Oprah' with his mom about his sobriety. We all decided to hop on a plane and go surprise him on the show. I remember when we all sat down in the room after 'Oprah.' We all said, 'OK guys, if we're going to do this again, it's going to have to be 110 percen.' We're blessed to do a tour again."

Brian Littrell: The No. 2 Heartthrob

During the hiatus: He married Leighanne Wallace in September 2000 and had his first son, Baylee, in November 2002.

The effect of his wife and son: "I think they add to me as a person and make me better. Favorite new song: There's a tossup...I have a connection to 'Never Gone' because of Kevin - when he lost his father, I lost an uncle. The other one is 'I Still'."

AJ McLean: The Character

That was then: The hiatus was partly triggered by his need to go into rehab for drug and alcohol abuse.

This is now: "Now living a sober life, my life has changed 360 degrees for the better."

What will this tour be like: "We've kind of simplified our show from all the blowing everything up on stage productions we've done in the past. We still do dance, and we do go back to some of the old choreography that our fans are very familiar with, such as the hat routine on 'All I Have To Give'."

Howie Dorough: The Quiet One

During the hiatus: He got involved in business ventures.

His Backstreet Boys role: "This time around I'm trying to make sure that we keep account of all of our accounting. I review all the bills on behalf of the group, do all the signing off on checks and make sure that we're on top of our business."

Thoughts on the 'N Sync rivalry: "We've always had the utmost respect for them. It was a competition creaated more by the media...if anything, it was a good, healthy, friendly competition."

Kevin Richardson: The Leader

During the hiatus: He married Kristin Willits in June 2000 and starred as Billy Flynn in the musical "Chicago" in 2003.

The risks of taking a hiatus: "Everything moves pretty quickly in the music industry. It's all about what's new, what's next, what's going on, and whenever you take a break like we did...there's always a risk that when you're out of sight, you're out of mind."

Where the Backstreet Boys are headed
: "We're going to take it day by day, album by album. And who knows, we may be like the Eagles or the Beach Boys or the Rolling Stones and the Temptations."

|Dec. 2| 20 Questions with Nick Carter

Our favorite Backstreet Boy, Nick Carter, talks eating bugs, jokes and why girls make him tongue-tied.

1. What's the first thing people notice about you?
~I'm pretty wild on stage and people think that's the real me, but I'm actually a private person, so that surprises them when they meet me.

2. Name three things you couldn't live without?
~My guitar, the show Lost and my laptop - I use it for everything, from business to video-chatting with friends.

3. If we gave you £500 to spend, what would you blow it on?
~I'd take a bunch of my friends out to a club in London. I've been to Chinawhite loads of times but I think there are much better clubs. I like Trap.

4. Tell us a joke.
~Two chickens are about to cross the road. One starts crossing and looks back at the other chicken and says, "Why aren't you coming?"The other chicken replies, "Because you're moving to clucking fast." I just made that up - can you tell?!

5. What's your biggest bugbear?
~Being bored. I hate sitting around not doing anything. I get like that before a show. We arrive at the venue and wait around for hours, but I just want to get on stage.

6. Who makes you smile?
~Other people making fools of themselves like on TV shows such as Dirty Sanchez and Jackass.

7. What's the best gift anyone's ever given you?
~Actually, I was given a silver necklace and bracelet today by a girl who was at our sound-check party. I wear a lot of jewelry from fans. I've got this key chain in my bag with trinkets on it from fans all over the world. It's like my good-luck charm.

8. What don't you understand about the opposite sex?
~I grew up in a house with four women - my mum and three sisters - so I understand a lot!

9. What was your first thought when you woke up?
~I shouldn't have drunk last night. I went to a Chinese restaurant in Manchester with friends.

10. Who does your washing?
~While we're on tour, a sweet woman called Johannah washes all our clothes. She's very motherly.

11. Describe your most vivid childhood memory.
~My dad was a captain of power boats in Tampa Bay and I'll never forget the time we lost one of our boats. I went to help my dad and his friends find it. It was winter and absolutely freezing. We found it, but the boat we were in got stuck in shallow waters, so I got out to help push. It was so cold my hands just froze, when we eventually got home, I did the worst thing possible and put my hands under the hot tap to thaw them out, but ended up scalding myself - ouch!

12. Describe your perfect lost weekend.
~I have a boat in the Florida Keys, so I'd jump on a plane, go to the Keys and hop on my boat. I'd go fishing, scuba diving and chill out.

13. Who leaves you tongue-tied?
~Girls. You don't meet many who want to talk about deep stuff, so when I do, it leaves me tongue-tied. Intelligent conversations are special.

14. Describe the best bit of gossip you've heard all week.
~I don't really listen to gossip. If it's somebody else's business, then it doesn't concern me.

15. What thoughts keep you awake at night?
~I worry about world problems and the way we're treating the planet.

16. What did your teachers say about you?
~My teachers had a hard time with me because I was a slow learner, but a couple of them took chances with me. I was in a lower grade but, because I could sing, one of my teachers picked me to do the school play. She's the reason I got into music.

17. What's your nickname?
~My mates used to call me 'Kaos' because I can be a big ball of energy. Things that go on in my life are pretty chaotic at times.

18. What's the strangest thing you've put in your mouth?
~A cooked bug in Japan or China.

19. Who would you like to be for a day and why?
~I'd like to be someone in the FBI or CIA who knows all the big secrets and if there's other life out there. That fascinates me.

20. Which famous people, dead or alive, would you like to be stuck in a lift with?
~Marlon Brando because this world is missing actors like that. And Marilyn Monroe because she was hot!

Backstreet Boys' new single, I Still, is out next month.
