Nick: "I Love Swedish Girls"...
We meet a worn and tired Nick Carter in a suite at the Sheraton in Stockholm. He's been up since 7 a.m. to do radio interviews and is hiding his tired eyes under a bucket hat. He looks different now and not as boyishly pretty as earlier. The explanation? He's living his own life, without considering his role in the Backstreet Boys, and that means more partying and not the same strict training. To be honest, he looks closer to 32 than 22.
"When you're in a group, you play a role. You hcan only show half of yourself and not too much. While there was a lot of pressure on me in [the group], there's almost more now. All the focus is on me right now and a lot of people are curious about if I'll be able to handle a solo career." Why are you doing this album?
"It's something personal I've wanted to do since I was a kid. I love what I've done with [bsb], but I wanted to do something different. Something more rebellious that's more me. I love rock and I've always listened to it so I decided to do that kind of music. There's been so much inside of me and I felt I was boiling inside and had to let it out. I had to find myself and took some time off. That's when I started to write my own material. It was a kind of therapy for me."
You must have seen a freaky amount of stuff [with a subtext of, "a lot of freaky/sick stuff"] during all your years of touring!
"Yeah, I have; greed(Gier), envy(Neid), all those ugly sins. The whole sex, drugs and rock'n'roll thing. But at the same time I've seen cool things, too, that guys my age would never have a chance to see."
Have you ever thought about just dumping the whole singing career thing and doing something else?
"Yeah, sometimes. Maybe go to college, live in another country and learn a new language. I'm a sea freak, too, so I could see working for the Coast Guard. Or maybe I'd like to be a baseball player after all this."
You've said before that you could see moving to Sweden.
"Yeah, I have a lot of Swedish friends, like Max Martin. I've almost grown up here because I've recorded so much music with Swedes. I'd like to have an apartment in Stockholm."
There are rumors that you have a Swedish girlfriend?
"I've dated a Swedish girl, but not any more. I love Swedish girls, but I don't want a relationship right now. I don't like being controlled, I want to live with someone on equal terms."
So you've only ever met controlling girls?
"Yeah, I guess so. I'm still waiting for the right one."
