Prologue
Keith managed to balance himself and Kevin as he helped his friend reached the side entrance of the palace. Kevin sneaked away from his bodyguard and went clubbing on his own. And those incompetent bastards, Keith thought angrily, failed to locate the prince just because Kevin left his tracking bracelet at home. Luckily, Kevin managed to go home alive and safe. But Keith is going to make sure that the king will know of this, for Kevin's own good. He witnessed the threats in his friend's life and he wouldn't like any of it to happen. Kevin must hear a very sound reprimand from his father.
There were sudden bright lights coming behind them and Keith saw two black Range Rovers, in which he recognized were the royal security team. They were with them all along? He turned when the palace side entrance suddenly opened and five men came out, with Howie trailing behind them. The men took the sleeping Kevin from Keith to take him to his room.
"What took you so long?" Howie asked Keith.
"Huh?" Keith followed Howie inside the palace. Hopkins, the butler, greeted him cordially and gave him a steaming mug of coffee. Howie knew this all along, Keith figured that out immediately. So, that's why no harm has occurred to them while Kevin was out 'alone.' Howie made sure of that.
"My friend at the bar saw you come in when we were looking for Kevin. He decided to call me. I assumed my brother would follow soon after so I instructed my security to go there. I can't find Kevin's, probably scouring all over the place to find where he is." Howie said quietly. Hopkins quickly added that he managed to contact Kevin's security and they are on their way back to the castle anytime now. Keith glanced around as he sipped his coffee. Everything in the palace is quiet now. He glanced down the hall leading to the Kevin's office and found the hall's lights were discreetly on. Guards stood on every post. Furthermore, the king and queen must have already been resting in their official residence in Pearl Castle, so they didn't know what happened. With all the guards everywhere, how did Kevin manage to escape from their sight?
"Thanks for the cover-up, man," Keith said. "And thanks for the coffee. Aren't you supposed to be in Athenaeum?" He asked. Howie is currently on his last year in the university, taking up Political Science and Government Administration.
"Tomorrow. I just came home because of Kevin's debut party yesterday." Howie glanced to where the guards have gone to take Kevin. "He's never been irresponsible like this before, running away from his bodyguards." He shook his head. "Papa will be mad if he hears about this..."
"Are you going to tell His Majesty?"
Howie looked at the man he looked up like his own elder brother aside from Kevin. "You should be the one to tell this, Keith."
"You're his brother."
"Yes, but our relationship as brothers weren't just like before. I don't want to irate him for now. But you can tell Papa. Excuse me." His face grew sad. Things weren't the same since Kevin started acting cold towards Howie, indicating too that he has no right in the family. He is nothing but just an adopted orphan who couldn't find his parents. He turned to walk away, finalizing his conversation with Keith.
"He felt rebellious after what His Majesty announced to him yesterday," Keith said. Howie stopped and looked at him in question. "Kevin told me earlier that your father confided to him about his engagement to someone." He blinked twice as he felt the effects of coffee in him. He didn't drink much. One of them must be sane enough to get each other home. He took Adrienne, their other friend, home first before proceeding directly to Bordeaux Castle, the princes' official residence.
"I was surprised by Papa, too." Howie answered. "That is so eighteenth-century. I didn't know that tradition like that still exists for the eldest child in this family. I can't blame Kevin. Who would be happy that at the day of your coming-of-age, aside from an induction as Duke of Heather, you'd be presented with an engagement to someone you hardly knew? It's surprising, and for Kevin, it is too much to bear right now."
"Yes, Kevin was mighty surprised at that. The woman he flirted with last night happened to be his own betrothed." Keith found the situation amusing as he chuckled. "I could still feel Kevin's embarrassment. He clearly opposed to that tradition when he learned of it when he was 18. And now he's 21, things came out as your father planned it."
Howie nodded. "My brothers and I now wondered who this Lady Cristin of Deveraux is anyway. I doubt if Kevin will marry her as planned. We hardly heard about her. I thought it'd be someone like Ayesa but she's our second cousin and Kevin wouldn't marry a family."
"He is the most stubborn, hot-tempered person I've known when things dictate him to do this and that. He usually doesn't take orders from anyone, even if it's the king's word." Keith added. And he knew that with Kevin's resistance to the tradition would make things harder for him from now on.
"Man," Howie slowly shakes his head. "Papa is going to have a hard time on that one..."

Seven years later...
"Who was there?" Kevin frowned as the servant announced the arrival of his fiancée, Cristin. He shuts down his computer and walked towards the mini-bar in his office.
"Lady Cristin is here, Your Royal Highness," the maid replied.
"All right, enough of the formalities," the woman impatiently said and quietly thanked the maid as the other immediately left. The newcomer closed the door behind her and walked towards Kevin's office desk. She ceremoniously threw a newspaper on top of the desk and put her hands on her hips. "Just tell me exactly what was going on between you and that woman." Her chin rises up as she met Kevin's look.
Kevin would have loved to stare at the beauty in front of him but not this time. A pretty face, long slender legs, slim body, and wavy blond tresses cascading her back couldn't amount to the irritation that started to build up inside him. He didn't like the way Cristin meddled with his personal affairs like he is already married to her. Well, they aren't married yet and probably will never be. He admitted attraction on the first time he saw her but after his father announced their engagement seven years ago, he suddenly lost interest. The challenge of pursuit and courting disappeared in an instant. He's not yet ready for the idea of marriage, especially in this kind of marriage that his father obliged him to.
Kevin cleared his throat. "First of all, the woman's name is Lois." He started. "Second, she's just a fling so don't get jealous, my dear. I'll still probably be marrying you." He smirked. He poured himself a glass of brandy and drinks it.
"Well, I'm going to be a very jealous and possessive wife when that time comes. Have all the flings that you wanted but I don't want to hear any of it when we get married." Cristin raised an eyebrow. "Spare me some respect, Kevin. Even if not everyone knows we're engaged and we're supposed to be married by now. I'm just taking my patience with you." Their engagement remains a secret within the family and only will be announced if the ten years given to them has gone and they still haven't decided to get married. That's how the tradition runs among the eldest child of the reigning monarchy. It is happening now with Kevin and for him; it was like a death sentence to just get married to a woman forced to him.
"Yeah. I enjoy watching you get more patience, Cristin," Kevin grinned devilishly. "It's been what? Seven years. Whew! Such patience. Count more years before I finally decided to marry you." He lighted one cigarette and began to smoke inside the office. He knew Cristin is irritated over his smoking habit. He really doesn't smoke and he does it only to irritate her.
"Stop that." Cristin frowned, and Kevin must have seen a hint of concern across her face. He ignored it. It's just an imagination. Cristin will never be concerned of him. All she wanted is to follow the tradition and go through the opportunity that was given to her to become his betrothed. He knew lots of women like her who dreamed of living in the palace of becoming a princess, or even to be his queen. But the difference from them, Cristin is not some snob who'd want things to go her way. She's really a very patient person, and she took all the time to wait for him. It's just that sometimes, she seemed to be nagging about 'them' as if they are in a relationship.
Kevin shook his head. "Aside from Lois, what brings you here anyway?"
Cristin smiled - that megawatt-kind of smile Kevin always wanted to see. "I also met someone from the hospital when I went there to see Howie's girlfriend, Ingrid." Kevin gave her a questioning look. "Does the name Kayla Murdock rings a bell?"
Kevin's face reddened. He shot her a warning glare.
"She was there because there were complications after she aborted her own baby."
"That's not mine." Kevin turned towards the large glass windows and stared outside. Kayla was his girlfriend last month. Since nobody knows of his engagement, he continued having relationships with other women in which his father strongly disagrees. He and Kayla stopped dating after he found out that she's showing signs of pregnancy and she may want to claim it as his. His aunt, Princess Monique, was the one who noticed the signs and advised him to break off with her. He did, and he never cared to see her again. He couldn't be sure if the child is his because he knew Kayla was fooling around behind his back as well. It could be another man's baby. "The bitch knew better that it wasn't mine."
Cristin laughed. "Hey, stop being so defensive, Kevin. You should see yourself at the mirror. Don't you want kids? I'll give you as many as you want when we get married, don't worry."
"If I ever married you." Kevin retorted, facing her.
"It will happen. Don't worry too much about it, Kevin." Cristin replied. She now saw the reason why she went to his office. She saw Kevin gets upset and she felt contented to leave now. She turned towards the door. "I'm leaving. Goodbye, honey. Until our next battle." She stopped halfway towards the door and exaggeratedly turned back to him. "Oh!"
Kevin watched her. If in some other time, he'll find her actions amusing but not now. He found her expressive face really charming but he won't let her know about it. Cristin's eyes widened as if she suddenly remembered something very important to tell him. "Kayla also told me that the child's not yours. Guess what?" She smiled and took her time to continue. She has Kevin's full attention. "It's Nick's."
"Nick! Fuck that kid!" Kevin exclaimed furiously. Cristin triumphantly smiled as she exits the office, leaving Kevin fuming intensely.

Cristin walked down the hall with a wide grin on her face. She's in a light mood that she greeted every person she passed by. Everyone knows her, especially the employees in the palace. She's been introduced as a close family friend and they grew accustomed seeing her going to and fro the palace.
She made Kevin mighty furious back at the office. That's just a part of her plans. She'll ruin Kevin slowly but surely. Well, she's just telling him the truth of what she learned from Kayla. Luckily, the poor woman doesn't want to mess up with the royalty and she eagerly accepted the money Cristin offered. As soon as she's ready to be discharged at the hospital, with the bills already paid by Cristin, Kayla will go home to Romania to start anew. Now, Cristin had to find Nick to warn him about his brother's fury and maybe about Kayla and his supposed-to-be child. Poor kid! She can't blame Nick either for doing nasty towards Kevin. He's been mean to Nick, and the younger prince may have wanted to get even with the elder one.
"Hi, Cris," Nick greeted cheerfully when they met at the front door of the palace. He had his backpack on him, probably just went home from Cornwall. She honestly liked the young man. Nick is one of the nicest people in the family, amidst occasional naughtiness and craziness. She could tolerate him better than his eldest brother.
"Nick. I'm so glad to see you!" Cristin showed a smile and hugged him. The blonde one chuckled and returned the gesture.
"You are?" Nick's cute baby face stared back at her. Who would have thought that behind that innocent face, he has done something terrible and nasty towards his brother, something like bedding his brother's fling and making her pregnant?
"Yes. Listen, whatever happens, don't come near Kevin. I unleashed him today and he's ready to bite anyone's head right now." Cristin said with a laugh, a nervous laugh actually.
Nick laughed. "Kevin's always like that. But what did you do to irate him this time?"
Cristin bit her lower lip. How could she tell Nick? She might lose the very best friend she had in Kevin's family. She turned to look down the hall and saw Kevin's office door opened. Oh my! Kevin's coming out. She instantly pulled Nick to the other hall towards the north wing to avoid being in Kevin's sight. Nick gave her a look of wonder. "I teased him again about our engagement and his relationship with Lois." Cristin replied, half the truth of what she really wanted to tell him.
"Lois McFadden?" Nick smiled. "That's cute. I just met her last weekend when I went to Seychelles and she overly flirted with me."
"Oh, no more flirting with any of your brothers' girlfriends, Nick. I just got through with Kayla." Cristin said then bit her lower lip in surprise. She slipped! Nick is now looking at her with a frown.
"What about Kayla?" Nick's hand suddenly gripped her arm tightly. My, the kid got an instant temper like his brother, Cristin thought. She saw Nick's brows furrowed.
Cristin smiled coolly, despite of her nervousness. "I bumped into her at the hospital because she was there for the complications she had from her abortion. She told me you're the father." As soon as the words came out, Nick was taken aback. He lost his grip on her arm and stepped back.
"Is that true?" Nick asked in a soft whisper. "Did Kevin knows?"
Timidly, Cristin nodded. There has been a long pause. To her surprise, a sad grin crossed his angelic face. "That does it," Nick said. He shakes his head. He slowly walked away as his face turned devastated over the news that his first child was aborted.
A smile slowly dawned upon Cristin's face. Now that's what you call a reaction, she thought amusingly.

Kevin could hear the constant thumping of the basketball at the indoor gym of the Bordeaux Castle. It is the private property of the king and named after the family name: Bordeaux. The House of Bordeaux has been around for over the centuries thus, already being part of the Arkadian history. The indoor gym is a new addition in the castle after a renovation in the south wing. It was the youngest prince, Nickolas', idea for a gym so that their father wouldn't be worried of his sons' usual schedules to the gym for routinely workout. Having a gym of their own will provide all the sports amenities they will need.
"Catch it, Bri!" Kevin heard Nick when he neared the double doors of the gym entrance. He saw Nick, Alex, Howie and their cousin, Brian, on a basketball game. Watching on the benches are their girlfriends, including Giselle and Anastasia, their younger cousins. Cristin also happened to be there. She always makes her presence visible whenever Kevin is in the palace.
Nick dribbled the ball to the left and side stepped from Alex who's guarding him. Brian positioned himself by the ring, standing close against Howie who's holding him from his attempt and a chance to get the ball from Nick.
"Booyah!" Nick shouted as he jumped and released the ball to make a three-point shot. Brian jumped as the ball neared the ring. He caught it with his hands and went it straight through the hoops. Howie groaned aloud in frustration.
"Booyah?" Alex asked Nick. But the younger one just winked at his brother as Howie gets the ball to start another round. Nick was laughing as he faced the ladies watching them and made a bow.
"Hey!" Kevin shouted. Everyone stopped and turned to him. Kevin went straight to the court as Cristin stood up and started towards where he's going. She knows what is bound to happen. Kevin's brows furrowed so badly one would think those were connected.
Nick turned and his smile faded when he saw his elder brother. The next thing he knew was Kevin's fist landing on his face.
There was sudden commotion in the gym. Nick immediately stood up from where he fell and saw Kevin being held back by Cristin, Brian and Alex. He ran towards the man to retaliate but Howie pulled his shirt and held him back, as well. Giselle and Anastasia were there and hugged Nick to keep him from fighting back. Ingrid and Samantha, Alex's girlfriend stood there, watching. Nick felt blood on his nose but he didn't mind. "How dare you, Kev! What did I do this time?"
"Ask yourself, and Kayla. Fuck you, Nick. You're such a kid!" Kevin struggled to let loose.
"Kayla?" Nick laughed. Kevin hated it. His own kid brother, laughing at his stupidity. He hated it when he didn't even have the idea that his own brother fooled around with his fling behind his back. He'd wring his neck once he gets close to him. "You should be thankful, Kev. One, because we all learned that she's a first-class bitch and two, because I'm capable of bearing a child." There were gasps among the people inside when Nick said it. Thankfully, the people only consist of the princes and their girlfriends, and the Princesses Giselle and Anastasia. They can be trusted not to squeal anything to the media.
"You fathered a child, Nick?" Alex laughed. He turned to the women in the room. "Okay, ladies, everyone. Leave us alone for a while." The princes waited as the women went out of the gym, and out of earshot. "Fuck, Nick! Why did you do that?" Alex exclaimed when they were now alone.
"I'm mad at Kevin, so I fucked his woman." Nick retorted. "And I regret what Kayla has done with it." His jaws clenched and he casts a glare towards Kevin.
"You mean..." Howie trailed off as he guessed what Nick meant by that. The younger man nodded. Everyone is calm now. They stood there in the middle of the court talking, although Kevin and Nick are still glaring at each other.
"Where's Kayla?" Brian asked.
"She went home to Romania," Nick said. He told them about what Cristin did with the woman. "If it wasn't for you, Kev, this would not have happened!" The sixteen-year-old finished angrily.
"Oh yeah? What would you do then to get even?" Kevin pushed Nick angrily but the other one didn't budge. They stood there face to face. "You screwed it up, Nick. Don't take the blame on me." He smirked then turned to leave.
"All right, so I won't blame you. I'm responsible for Kayla after that." Nick said. "That's because you don't have a backbone, Kev. Hear that? You're not man enough." While he speaks, Kevin stopped and turned back to him. Nick continued. "You need those women just to feel good about yourself. Why don't you start acting responsible and trustworthy? After all, you're the heir apparent. Take away the people's doubts on you. Because if not, Howie deserves the throne better than you!"
"Why you –" Kevin went back to him.
"Enough of it, Kev." Howie calmly said, stepping in front of Nick to protect him. "Don't lay another finger to Nick." His eyes gave a warning look. He's maybe gentle and nice, but they never provoke the man. "Are you so angry because Nick fucked your woman behind your back? And you didn't have the idea it happened? Wasn't Cristin good enough for you? She's a nice woman, Kev."
"Oh, I can do whatever I want with my brother and with Cristin, Howie. Get out of my way," Kevin started to push Howie, only to get a hard punch on the face in return. So hard that Kevin fell down on the wooden floor.
"Let's get out of here, Nick. There's no sense talking with someone with a narrow mind." Howie said and left the gym. Nick followed behind.
"Kevin..." Brian said as he tries to help Kevin get up from the floor. But Kevin waved him away and get up on himself.
"I'm not yet through with you," He called to Howie and Nick but the two just ignored him. He turned to Alex and Brian. "What are you staring at?" He growled.
"That's not right, man." Alex said. "You're messing up your life. What do you suppose to expect from Nick? He looks up to you because you're his big brother, but you disappointed him in so many things. Don't blame him for what happened."
"What?" Kevin stood face to face with his brother.
"Please, Kevin. Enough of your temper tantrums. You're not a kid anymore," Brian calmly said, standing close between his cousins.
"Nobody understands me in this family." Kevin muttered before he turned on his heel and left the gym. Brian and Alex watched him leave.
"Now, how could we understand him if he can't tells us his problem?" Alex asked out aloud.

Nick ignored Kevin when his elder brother entered the ballroom for their cousin's, Anastasia, debut party. She's the eldest daughter of the king's youngest sister, Princess Monique, who is now celebrating her eighteenth birthday. Nick, who came home from the prestigious boarding school, Cornwall, is her main escort for the evening. So, that leaves Nick no other choice but to stay at the party and just ignore Kevin.
"Oh, please, Nick. Smile. You're cute and Alexei is here," Anastasia muttered as she smiled to everyone. "Don't mind, Kevin. He can be the grizzly bear sometimes but he will never ruin this day for me."
Nick chuckled. "I like the metaphoric analysis, Stace." He said. "Will you mind if we walk over to Alexei to talk for a while?" He suddenly felt excited to get near his childhood friend, of whom he grew up with in Theo, the nearby province from Ortho, Arkadia's capital city. Alexei is a daughter of a rancher who lives near the castle where the royal family usually spends summer, and where the Queen Mother Marguerite permanently resides after the death of the former king.
Kevin watched Nick and Anastasia walked over towards Alexei. He looked at Nick's childhood friend and grinned devilishly. "Oh no, I think I know what it is you're thinking." Cristin said, suddenly turning up beside him. Kevin smelled the soft lavender scent of her perfume. "Not Alexei, Kev."
"Why not?" Kevin chuckled.
"She's a hands-off item, Kevin. She's not a Kayla-type of woman. You'll destroy her once you do what Nick did to you."
Kevin looked at her in wonder. "You're amazing, don't you know that?" He turned back to where Nick is and he missed the unusual look from Cristin's face. "You knew what's on my mind. I've come to fully realize now that you're obsessed with me, Cristin. So, how about going on threesome with me and Alexei, if I had to get her tonight? You can be her chaperone."
"You're disgusting, Kevin." Cristin muttered, not wanting anyone to hear their silly conversation. Her jaw dropped open when Kevin's current flame walked up to them and whispered something on Kevin's ear. Without any word, Kevin and Lois left Cristin and walked out of the ballroom. Cristin drew a deep breath and tried not to show anyone that she's affected. Some people among the crowd are probably watching her reaction to such, and Cristin won't give them the pleasure to see that she's actually feeling hurt and on the verge of tears any moment from now. The people would wonder. She still couldn't bring herself up to show everyone that she cared deeply for the crowned prince. Besides, there's a mission to take care of.
She quietly escaped from the ballroom and in to the garden. And when Cristin sat on one of the benches, she couldn't help to hold back the feelings. It won't take her patience to wait for seven years if she doesn't feel anything towards the man. She admits that Kevin is just part of a revenge, a mission she had to undertake. But through the course of time, waiting and hoping that Kevin will do his part on the bargain that their parents had arranged for them, Cristin learned to love him and accept him for what he is. It doesn't matter if he womanized and drank too much. She knew she could accept him for every shortcomings he'd had, and hoped that maybe someday, he'll woke up to realize that he also felt the same way towards him.
And then maybe, she can also forget her revenge, which is not really intended to him, but to his father, King Benedique.
~~~
Kevin let Lois pulled him inside his intended room in Castle Lawrence, an 18th-century castle named after his ancestor, Prince Lawrence of the House of Bordeaux. It is where his cousin is celebrating her debut party. The lights inside Kevin's room were dimmed, but he immediately saw Brian standing near the dresser and grinning at him. "Cuz, what are you doing in my room?" Kevin asked Brian.
Brian shrugged. "Lois pulled me here earlier and I think she's cooking up something for both of us." He watched as Kevin pulled Lois towards the bed, making her straddling him as he sat on the edge. Lois leaned down to kiss Kevin.
Kevin forgot Cristin, never knowing that she's in the garden and crying over him.
Cristin walked towards the palace gardens but stopped when she saw Princess Monique going her way. The older woman, with all of her aristocratic physical attributes, never waver her look from her. Cristin knew what the woman is up to and once again, she has her same answer for her.
"Stupid woman. When are you going to marry Kevin? It's been almost seven years." Monique said without preamble.
"I know you knew your nephew well and we knew that Kevin is not easy to manipulate. You're may be successful in brainwashing him against Howie but you still can't control his life." Cristin replied.
"Or are you just telling me that you're falling for Kevin? Remember that you're nothing, Cristin, but just a viscount's daughter – a very low nobility rank and you're almost impoverished if not for me." Monique reminded her. Cristin hates her for that. "You're going to marry Kevin and make his life a living hell. I'll take care of the violence, while you can take away his wealth."
"I never forget, Your Royal Highness," Cristin made a mocking bow at her. She's probably the only person who could do that to the snobbish princess. She's not afraid of Princess Monique. If ever things go wrong from what was planned, Cristin has her own action to expose the princess and all her despicable acts. Monique hates Cristin for being that smart, that's why this woman is still alive. Cristin knew exactly how to blackmail her.
Cristin hates the fact that her own parents have been used to living a rich lifestyle and they couldn't bear losing the privileges and luxuries they grew accustomed to. And that's why, they agreed to Monique's offer of financial help in exchange for some favor from Cristin. Monique had to do it, even though she knew that Cristin is not just any other ordinary woman who will follow her every whim. And it's coincidental that His Majesty, King Benedique, has personally chosen Cristin to be his son's wife. Cristin's family has a good record in the society. The public didn't know of their financial downfall or their apprehension towards the situation. And even if the king already knew about that, he didn't judge them. He has strong beliefs over choosing Cristin to be his son's wife. Cristin, on the other hand, needs to do it for her family who expected much from her.
And the other factor that considered Cristin as a candidate was that she's the niece of the king's former betrothed, Lady Romina, who committed suicide when he called off their engagement and married Isabella instead. She was chosen merely to make up for the damage done to Romina many years ago when the king didn't marry her.
Cristin has her own personal cause for revenge. Her Aunt Romina shot herself on the head right in front of Cristin's two-year-old elder brother, Anthony. After taking her own life, Anthony, took the gun and imitated his aunt, which has caused his own death as well. The innocent boy didn't deserve to die in such a young age.
"I never forget, Your Royal Highness," Cristin repeated with jaws clenched. "Kevin is going to live like hell; he will wish he never met me at all."
~~~
Nick watched from the windows as his Aunt Monique and Cristin were talking in the gardens. What does the two have in common to have a conversation in the private gardens, and under the sun anyway? He knew his father's youngest sister, and his aunt is not the person who would just approach anyone in a very unusual setting. He sensed Princess Monique's snobbery and he secretly felt awkward about it. He doesn't like people like his aunt, who felt herself above anything else around her. She even sometimes glared at him when he was young and out to play with Anastasia and Giselle.
What could be those two were talking about? Nick wondered. He liked Cristin and he doubt that she's anywhere closer to be like his Aunt Monique. She's a smart woman, and a nice person. He looked up to her like a sister he never had. He adored her and had a wishful thinking that Kevin should have married her now. He watched as Cristin's jaw clenched and said something to his aunt. He couldn't name what it is, but something is going on between those two. He has to secretly find out what it is.

A year later...
Kevin went out of his office and saw Cristin walking down the hall. She seemed busy with what she's reading on a piece of paper. When Kevin slammed the door shut, Cristin jumped in surprise and looked at him. Kevin succeeded in getting her attention. They stared at each other for a long time and Kevin couldn't comprehend what he saw in her eyes.
"Are you alright?" Cristin asked which surprised him. Her concern was least expected.
"I'm drunk," Kevin replied truthfully. He looked at her from head to foot. She had her blonde hair go straight from being wavy, and she lost weight. Being an architect must have been making her very busy. He even seldom sees her in the palace from the past few weeks.
Cristin nodded. "That's usual," she began to continue on her way. But Kevin caught her arm.
"What are you doing here?"
"Nick asked my help for his homework on Economics. His brothers weren't here and he couldn't go to you either. So, he called me." Cristin replied.
"Really? Or are you just making a move on my brother?" With his question, Cristin laughed. His face remained expressionless although Cristin's laughter made him want to smile.
"Please, Kevin. Is that your joke of the day?" Cristin caressed his face. "My business is with you, not with Nick. That's like incest. He's almost like a brother to me." She rolled her eyes, and a smile remained on her face. "I heard about Adrienne and Howie. I don't know what has come in to your friend's mind, and guts, to even go out with your brother. She said a lot of nasty things about him. Does this mean she swallowed all her words and just accepted Howie's invitation for a date and possibly become a princess someday?"
Kevin frowned. "You have no right for an opinion, Cristin."
"Who said so? You? This is a free country, Kevin. And I'm just concerned with Howie. It's shocking that he's dating Adrienne." Cristin said. Kevin knew she's right. He's shocked as well when he learned that his best friend and Howie are going out. The couple is still the talk of the society circle, and Kevin already heard different opinions about the two. Cristin's opinion is not far from them. As for him, he clearly opposed about the two getting together. Adrienne's father is a social climber, and a power tripper. If Kevin could only do something, the ambassador already lost his position in the diplomatic society and vanished from Arkadia. He hates the way he thinks about his stand in the society like he wished he was born royal, the way he treats his family when he already had taken a mistress of his own, and the way he hurts Adrienne with all of his actions. No one deserves a father like that. One of these days, he'll talk to his father about Ambassador Jacques Chisolm. The man needs a life's lesson for his misdemeanors.
"What's with the silence? Did you wish that it was you instead of Howie dating Adrienne?" Cristin smirked.
Kevin turned to her. "No, Cristin. I would never date my best friend." He grinned. "And I would certainly never date or marry you." He pulled her closer until their faces were just inches away from each other. Cristin could feel his soft breathing and she had this urge to kiss him right there and then. But of course, Kevin wouldn't like that. And the least thing that Cristin wanted is for Kevin to turn himself more away from her. She already lost him through that engagement. On his twenty-first birthday, Cristin was already informed about it before Kevin did. And she felt instant attraction when the prince approached him on that night and asked for a dance. She never wanted the moment to end but it had to. She liked him, not as some royal and rich man, but his presence and aura that immediately penetrated her being. But her hopes ended when as soon as the king announced at the private study room about betrothing him to her, Kevin lost his interest on her. Is she not worth marrying for but just some fling to warm his bed?
So, although she likes him, her revenge must come first.
Cristin cleared her throat and tried not showing him how his words affected her. "That's an understatement. I've been hearing that bluff for like, eight years now. We'll get married. Don't worry about that." Cristin freed herself from Kevin's hold and continued walking down the hall.
"You're so confident, Cristin. Why do you want so much as to marry me?"
"Isn't it obvious? This is a dream come true for me. I want to be a princess." Cristin replied, concealing the true motive she had for him.
"Let's see up to when it'll tire you out." Kevin called back.
"If I did, you'll miss me." Cristin replied without turning around. Kevin never knew how true soon it would be.

Princess Monique didn't have the patience to wait for Cristin to make the move on getting the relationship with Kevin further towards marriage. If the young woman said she'll take the right opportunity, not her. Monique had enough of waiting. Cristin should get down to the real business. If she couldn't start it, the princess had enough resources and a plan to do it.
She watched as Kevin sat with Brian and Alex on the front seat while watching the Royal Children's Choir on a pre-Thanksgiving concert. She glanced at her timepiece. Few minutes have gone by. Her accomplice is going to work anytime soon.
After the choir made a bow towards the crowd, and the royal guests, as well as some dignitaries and VIPs, made a standing ovation for them, Monique watched Kevin pulled out his mobile phone and read a message. The game has begun.

'Matt asked me about you and Cristin. He's interested in her. Just thinking, if you're not interested then maybe he can have Cristin.'
The message from his aunt kept on playing on his mind. Kevin drew a deep breath as he remembered Matthew Pearce. He didn't consider him as a friend but not an enemy as well. They've known each other since prep school days and what they had is a competitive relationship. May it be yacht racing, Superbike race, buying out lands or closing deals with a businessman or investor, Matt has always been a contender. Kevin may have lost a million bucks to Matt but he didn't mind. He enjoyed the competition with the man.
But he hit the nerve this time. Kevin couldn't explain the feeling when he read his Aunt Monique's message. A thought never occurred to him that a man would be interested with Cristin. And it panicked him to learn that there would be someone and Matt in particular. Why feel this way? What is that feeling with just the thought of Cristin with some man?
"What's with the deep breath? Any problem, cuz?" Brian asked Kevin. The latter shook his head.
"Did you know where Cristin is?" Kevin asked. The question has made Alex raised an eyebrow and tried not look interested. His gaze remained to the performers on stage.
Brian shrugged. "Geez, I don't know, Kevin. I'm not her sitter. And you should know it more than me. You're her –"
"I'm just asking, Bri." Kevin interrupted, not letting his cousin continue with what he's about to say. There were people around and he doesn't want anyone to hear about his secret engagement to a woman. He felt uneasy. He had this urge to leave the concert but it will cause disrespect to the organizers and the other people around them. But he wanted to see Cristin. He took out his mobile phone and made a message to Cristin. 'Where are you?' he typed. Cristin would laugh when she receives this. She knows that he hates phone messaging and would rather preferred calling the person he wanted to talk to. He stared in blank space when he realized how he and Cristin could know each other well sometimes.
Alex, on the other hand, noticed the growing uneasiness of his seatmate. "Chill, Kev. This is the last performance. After this is over, Brian and I can make a cover-up so you can skip the reception." He told his brother. He secretly smiled when he read that message Kevin had typed. When the phone blinked, he made an effort to read what is Cristin's reply.
'Getting ready for a date. Do you want to come along? Ha-ha.'
Kevin silently groaned in frustration after he read that. On the other hand, Alex secretly smiled.

Kevin went inside his father's office and saw him standing by the window, looking outside. His father is already old, but the king is still strong enough for his age. Kevin never saw his father as weak, or maybe that was King Benedique was just trying to show everyone. He wanted to lead the kingdom dynamically like his father. But right now, there have been lot of pressures from the people around him. They were expecting him to live up on what they wanted to see him as the future king. Unlike Howie, he didn't have to prove anyone his worth. The legacy has been laid upon him ever since he was conceived. Whether they like it or not, he is going to be the king. And he wanted to do the things he wanted to do on his own. It's not his problem if anyone would see any fault with that. This is his life.
"You called to talk with me, Papa?"
King Benedique turned and looked at his eldest son. How time passed by so quickly and this man before him was the baby who used to crawl down the office and tried breaking off the flower vases. And although there's something in the past that he and Isabella were trying to forget, Kevin and his brothers made them go on with their lives. He is proud of all his sons, although now that they are all grown-up, they are starting to build something for their own lives. He couldn't prevent it from happening as he and his wife just watched them do things their way.
Even Kevin. But the eldest prince is destined to be king, his successor, and with that comes along some traditions that he should follow. He may have wanted a life of his own; but he's the throne's heir. His destiny has already been prepared for him the moment he was born.
The king motioned Kevin to take a seat. "I certainly do not approve of your indifference with your brother, Howie." Benedique started as Kevin sat down. He, on the other hand, remained standing. "What happened?"
"Are we on with this again, Papa? I told you, Howie is a threat to the monarchy. His Puerto Rican roots are factor enough to take this kingdom down."
"You're judgment is unacceptable, Kevin. And Howie is a good person. You, of all people, should know it better."
Kevin shakes his head. He still couldn't tell the reasons why he is absolutely against Howie's legality to succeed on the throne if he outlived their father and Kevin. Evidences are still being gathered, he thought. "Yes, I knew better, Papa. So, is Howie the only reason why you called me here?"
The king casts his son a glare. He couldn't understand why Kevin had to be this stubborn and narrow-minded. "There's also Cristin, Kevin. And it's been eight years."
"Why are you insisting her to me, anyway? As I've told you before, I don't want to marry her. What's with her that you wanted us to be together?" Although he's arguing with his father, he never raised his voice to him. He had lot of respect towards him but he just felt he had to voice out what was on his mind. And his father always hears them out.
"That's the tradition, Kevin –"
"I don't care about the tradition, Papa. I want my life as it is and I'll do what I want to do. I'm sorry, Papa, if I disappointed you in so many things. But you told me once to follow what my heart desires, and I think that this is just what I wanted." Kevin said apologetically. "I love you but please don't let this thing to happen for me."
"You have to get married before you become king. Being married will make you more suitable to lead the kingdom," Benedique said in a final tone. And that's when Kevin noticed that something could have been wrong with the strongest person he looked up to. "I'm getting old, Kevin. I wanted to retire, not because I'm tired of my duties as a king. But I trust that a young mind could do better than mine. You, as my heir, could lead this country in to the new millennium. There are so many challenges ahead of us, and I believe you can lead us very well."
Kevin went silent. He never anticipated taking over the throne in the near future. Like Howie, he's reluctant to inherit the legacy. No matter how they have to live up to everyone's expectations, to become the country's sovereign still scares him. It's too much to put on his shoulders, and he's afraid that he might not be enough for everyone. He stared back at his father. "Papa, are you planning to abdicate?"
"I am thinking about it. John has been preparing himself as well on the papers if you'll take over as the new king." Benedique turned towards the window once again. "Your Mama didn't know about this yet, even your grandmother." His mother, the Queen Mother Marguerite, is now living in peace at the family home in Theo, a province near the capital city. After the former king died, then-Queen Marguerite retired and went to her new home. She only went to the city for private family gatherings, which is if her doctors permit her.
"Papa, I'm not sure if I'm ready..."
"I know. I can see it. But I'm still giving you time to change your ways. This is your legacy, Kevin. You can make a promising hope for your countrymen." Benedique told his son. Kevin then, submits himself into a deep thinking.

Kevin tightened his closed fist as he watched Cristin seated on a chair and being approached by no less than Matt. It's a day for a charity polo game and Kevin hated this distraction. He is one of the players of the match but Cristin kept occupying his mind. He didn't care now if their team is losing the game. All he wanted is to finish it so that he can go to Cristin and talk to her on a very important matter. It's been two days since he and his father had that talk in the king's office.
"Your Royal Highness," a manservant gave him a towel to wipe off his sweat. Kevin muttered his thanks as he turned to where Cristin is. He hasn't seen her in a long time. She must be very busy with her work, and with a growing love interest with Matt. She must have given up on him. And Kevin hated it when he realized that Cristin is right. He missed her presence in the palace.
Cristin, on the other hand, wondered about Matt's sudden interest on her. As far as she knew, and heard, Matthew Pearce is gay. But here he is, taking a chance on her. Did God sent some divine powers to produce a miracle? If He did, then why Kevin is still not interested in her? Maybe, the divine intervention didn't affect both of them.
"What are your plans this evening, milady?" Matt asked with a smile. As charming as he is, nothing compares to Kevin's appeal.
"Dinner with friends," she lied. In truth, Brian just told her earlier to clear her schedule because Kevin wanted to see her. Who does Kevin think he is? That she'll just follow him around every time he told her to? Although she's looking forward to see and talk to him, she will not show it. Let Kevin do his own trick of approaching her. For the meantime, she is going to clear her schedule just for him.
"I see. I was thinking about taking you out for some opera on the cultural center. Maybe some other time, then." Matt said.
"Thanks for asking anyway," Cristin told him. She turned back to the field to watch as the polo game continues. For a moment, she caught Kevin's eye on her then he instantly turned away. She looked around but only found Brian as the only royalty present, aside from Kevin. She heard it before that when Kevin and Howie were young, Howie fell off from his horse and suffered some broken ribs. After what happened, Kevin insisted that no one from his brothers, or cousins, is going to learn how to ride on a horse. It was fear that has made him ordered it. That was then Cristin realized how deeply Kevin cared so much for Howie, and his family. And that explains in the gatherings that concern horses, that only Kevin is the only one attending. Nobody got interested with the animals, just like Kevin wanted it.
She watched as Kevin rode majestically on top of his horse. He looked good on it. The first time she saw him on his birthday ball, he was too handsome to believe that he is real. A strong, firm jaw that proved her opinion of him as that of a stubborn nature added the charm. Mysterious ocean green eyes that could silently command anyone with merely one look proved more of his royal stature. It was a trait he'd make a good use when he becomes king. His body is impressively hard and muscled; a body that could grace the large billboards of Kendall Boulevard if only the royal press office would allow it.
Kevin suddenly looked her way and he did some thing that he has never done before at her. He smiled to her in public.
~~~
Cristin started to walk towards her car when the game concluded. Her heart still palpitated wildly after that moment and she couldn't bring herself to face Kevin now. She might lose herself to his every word. That should not happen. She must be sane enough to face him like any other day she had with him. This growing attraction hinders her to continue with her planned revenge.
She was nearing her car when two men in suits approached him. She knew instantly that they were part of the royal security team. And she knew their business with her.
"Lady Cristin, if you'll just follow us on His Royal Highness' car..." a man inches taller than her spoke first.
"Did Prince Kevin wants to talk with me?" She asked innocently.
"Yes, my lady," came the answer of the other bodyguard.
"Please tell your boss that I'll just go straight to Bordeaux Castle from here. I just want to avoid the media fuss." Cristin told them.
"But –"
Knowing that their job would cost them what she wanted, she pulled out her mobile phone and called Kevin. The man instantly answered on the other line. "Who are you to just boss your bodyguards around and take me like I'm just some baggage that needs a lift?" she asked Kevin on the other line. She turned away from the guards' earshot.
"Well, I want to talk with you and this is the only way to approach you."
"You're very arrogant."
"Thank you. Now, will you come with them so we can proceed to Bordeaux and talk?"
Cristin gave in. "I don't want the attention on me, Kevin. So please, let me just go straight to your place alone and let your bodyguards leave me. I'll listen to what you have to say, if that's what you want."
"See you then, Cristin." Kevin replied on the other line. Cristin didn't wait for Kevin to finish as she immediately hung up on him. She turned to the bodyguards and relayed the message. Minutes later, she's already on the road towards the castle. She normally went through the strict inspections and when she reached the castle, she was led by another security in the common room. She met Adrienne on the hall. There's an unexplainable expression across the woman's face when she greeted Cristin.
"Hi, where have you been?" Cristin greeted her.
"I just came from Howie's office. And you? Looking for Kevin again?" Adrienne smirked.
"It's none of your business." Cristin retorted.
"Okay. If that's what you said. Bye, Cristin." Adrienne gave her a wave then left. Cristin followed the woman with an odd look. Despite the snobbery that the woman is trying to project, Adrienne looked like she's at lost. 'It must be the effect of her parents' divorce,' she thought as she continued towards the common room. It wasn't long when Kevin entered the room and sat opposite of her on the couch. Cristin quietly looked at him, noticing that he's up to something.
The silence was broken when Kevin cleared his throat. "It's been a long time, Cristin, but I hope that it's not yet too late for me to ask you of this." They held each other's look for a moment and when Cristin looked down, she noticed him holding out an old yet very beautiful sparkling ring on his hand.
She gasped when she realized what is happening.
"Cristin, will you marry me?"
Kevin dreamt of marrying out of love. He's an old-fashioned man and he always believes in love. He wanted spending his entire life with someone he loves, just like what his parents are spending now with each other. He envied them, and they inspired him. But he's not yet ready for love, much more for a lifetime commitment like marriage.
But the tradition is giving him the life's twists and turns. Sure, he actually likes Cristin but he couldn't tell if he is going to love her. What is love anyway? How does it feel to love a woman, especially that someone he is going to marry? Cristin is a different case. Their soon-to-be marriage is another story.
After that dreaded question passed through his lips, there's no turning back. He watched as Cristin was taken aback by his sudden marriage proposal. He thought she'll accept him as soon as he asked her about marrying him but she only sat in front of him with surprised expression on her face. It's really surprising though. But he couldn't tell her the details of his sudden decision. He thought a lot about this proposal and when he came up to finality, he decided that he had to marry Cristin to fulfill the tradition, to be eligible to inherit the throne once his father retires, to be given the superior power over Howie towards administering the kingdom, and to start anew. Being a married man will give him a new reputation. He's going to start being good now. Cristin asked to give her a day to decide and Kevin agreed. When they met the next day, she agreed on marrying him. At that moment, Kevin felt himself floating. It took him some self-control to prevent himself from jumping when she said her decision. It was like he was happy to know that Cristin wanted to marry him as well, and he felt relieved that all's well according to his plans.
He only invited Keith, his best friend, to witness this secret wedding. They asked Father Carl Kiefer to preside the ceremony. Luckily, they made the priest agreed on this secrecy. Kevin explained that he will announce it soon but he wanted his future-wife by himself for a certain period of time first. He couldn't tell that he wasn't even ready to let everyone know that he's married, like he's not proud of performing the ceremony. But he knew that sooner or later, his family will do everything to wed them properly in church and be witnessed by everyone.
Kevin glanced at his watch. What's taking that woman so long?
"Bored?"
Kevin turned up and saw Cristin, who looked absolutely glowing with her white short dress. His grandmother's ring glittered on her finger. "You're late."
"Traffic." Cristin replied.
"That's not an excuse." Kevin said. Cristin rolled her eyes, but still smiling. How could she smile at this particular occasion? He couldn't even lift a muscle to smile back. This wedding is nerve-wracking. This feeling is much worst than what he had in his investiture years ago.
"There's no point arguing now, Kevin. What matters now is that she's here," Keith told his best friend. Kevin drew a deep breath and the three started towards Father Kiefer's office. The holy man greeted them congenially and without further tête-à-tête, the wedding ceremony started.
For Cristin, she wanted to feel happy on this day. Yes, she's getting married to a man she loved after those eight years of waiting. But she also wanted to turn back and leave. Because when this marriage starts, Kevin will begin to suffer. Princess Monique will see to that. And she doesn't want it to happen with Kevin. She had to do something.
Her mind was preoccupied with thoughts that she didn't hear the priest asking her about taking Kevin as her husband. Kevin had to smooth her on the back to get her attention back to the ceremony.
"I do." Cristin glanced at Kevin. She'd be proud to have this man as her husband. But it's sad to think that he didn't marry her because of love. It was his duty as a prince that comes first. Kevin might have not told her but she knew that was his primary reason.
The wedding ceremony ended and the two shared a short, but sweet, kiss. Congratulations followed then Cristin excused herself to go to the ladies' room. Their gazes locked for a while and Kevin felt he doesn't want this woman out of his sight.
"You can go to the ladies' room later when we got in to the palace to tell my parents," Kevin told her.
"I need this now." Cristin insisted. Kevin noticed that she looks like she's going to cry if he still held her from going.
"Alright," Kevin nodded as he finally gave in. He felt something odd but ignored the feeling. He gripped her hand, his thumb rested on her wrist, before letting her go. He was surprised when before Cristin leaves, she reached out to press her lips against his. His mouth was instantly on hers, too, in a way that stole her breath away. When they heard the door opened and Keith was calling them as he comes in, the two broke apart. But each other's lips still linger.
They stared at each other for a while. Finally, Kevin let go of her hand. "I have to go." Cristin announced and left the room. Kevin watched her leave, only to find out later that she has really left and will never come back.
Months later . . .
Kevin watched on the TV as Howie's announcement of his engagement with Adrienne unfolds on the screen. Secretly, he's happy with his brother. Howie deserves to be happy more than anything else. Obviously, those two are so much in love and they will probably spending a lifetime together.
Unlike him.
He threw the wine goblet. It hit the wall and shattered into pieces. Moments later, he found himself crying down so many tears and staring into blank space. He felt so lonely now that he missed Cristin. He never thought that love could change him in a very odd way and to realize it when the object of that love has gone from his life. How could Cristin ever done this to him? How could that alien feeling crept into his heart without realizing it? How more stupid was he to learn about the weight of his loss when Cristin was gone? It's torturing him not knowing where she is.
She said she's only going to the church's restroom but it was almost half an hour and still hasn't gone back. She left him.
His musings were interrupted when the phone rang. Knowing who might be calling, he immediately answered. But it's not Clint, his hired private investigator to look for Cristin. It's John Lyndon.
"It's John, Prince Kevin. We need you here immediately. Your father had a heart attack."
Kevin felt a sudden leap in his heartbeat upon hearing it. He glanced at the TV and just in time, he saw Howie falling down from the podium where he is and everyone scrambled around in panic. His brother's bodyguards rushed and picked him up towards the hospital. Howie's been shot once again.
"Shit!" Kevin's heart beats faster. His hands started to tremble as he wiped his tears and gather himself before going out of the room. The hallway greeted him with silence. And if they could only speak, all of his secrets will be revealed enough to create a scandal to last the royal family for another lifetime. But he's planning to change ways now. Cristin made him a better man. And now that his father and brother were hurt, he's just going to prove to everyone his worth to the throne, his family's legacy.
He was out in the palace, his bodyguards closely followed behind when his mobile phone rang. He answered it as he went inside his car and the chauffeur sped off towards the hospital.
"Alex, where are you?" He asked his brother.
"Damn it, Kevin. I'm still waiting for the permission slip!" Alex said and Kevin heard muffled curses on the other line.
"Leave. They'll understand soon enough. We're talking about Papa, and that's their king." Kevin ordered and ended the call. But it rang again and saw that it was Nick on the other line.
"Kev?" The quiet yet tensed voice sounded through his ears. Since Howie's revelation of finding his true birth parents, Kevin realized that he's been really unfair to Howie. He admitted his entire fault, among other things, and asked for his brother's forgiveness. It's been hard but he swallowed all his pride to do the act. And with that show of humility brought Nick back to him. His relationship with his youngest brother is beginning to shed new light. On the other hand, Howie, being the kind person that he is, forgave him in an instant. It has been awkward at first, but their former relationship as close buddies was starting to get back. He realized all the unpleasant things he has done in his life for these past years. He loves his brother, and he'll do anything to protect Howie and save him from harm. He shouldn't have been too shallow enough to listen to his Aunt Monique's words against Howie. Now that he's shot once again, he'll impose death penalty to whoever has done it.
"Nick, are you on your way?" Kevin said. The kid loves them so much, and the conflict between them just started when he changed his attitude towards Howie. Nick didn't highly approved of that and he tried as much as he could to give Kevin a hard time just to bring back their old relationship as brothers, together. But they were okay now.
"I am, Kev. Please, are they going to be all right? John called me about Papa and Howie." Kevin heard the young man sniffed on the other line.
'Papa had a heart attack and Howie was shot. They are not sure going to be fine' Kevin wanted to scream at his brother but can't. Nick may have impregnated a woman before, but he's still young for this violence around him. He couldn't even tolerate having a swarm of bodyguards around him after an attempted kidnapping on him. The baby of the family is still terrified. "I hope so, Nick. Let's pray to God that they will soon."
"Where's Mama?" Kevin's concern flew to their mother, who is now in Theo to visit their grandmother, Queen Mother Marguerite, who is sick as well. "I hope she's okay, Kevin. I'm worried about Mama. Someone from us should watch over her." Nick said.
"I'll call her, Nick. Let's meet at the hospital. Be brave. We'll get through with this." The royal convoy reached the hospital and Kevin immediately rushed to the emergency room.
Kevin arrived just in time that the ambulance that took Howie reached the hospital. He saw his brother being rushed towards the emergency room. There has been lots of blood. Howie was unconscious and an oxygen mask was placed on him to keep him from breathing. It all seemed like a blur when the medical team just breezed right in front of him. The emergency room immediately closed and he can hear the commotion inside. Adrienne didn't found time to speak with him and followed where the medics brought her fiancé.
"Prince Kevin," John called.
"How's Papa? Where is he?" Kevin asked and went to the old man.
"He's in ICU, Kev. They're doing their best." John replied. "The doctor also told me about a coronary bypass surgery to widen the narrowed arteries that clogged the blood in his heart."
"I don't want to think of the worst to happen, John. Please, consent to everything the doctors would suggest just to save my father." Kevin felt tears stinging in his eyes.
"I'll do everything to influence them the best they can do, Prince Kevin. I don't want to lose my best friend as well."
"Your Royal Highness?"
Both turned when a doctor from the ER went out. Kevin immediately went to him. "Your brother lost a lot of blood and we lost him for a moment there. But we revived him back. We need a blood donor to provide him the blood he lost, or else, Prince Howie will die." They heard a beeping inside the ER and people calling out for something. "He has type A.," the doctor added.
Aunt Aurora, Kevin suddenly thought of Howie's biological mother. He is type AB, certainly won't do any help. "We'll get help right away, doc." He took his mobile phone and began punching numbers.
~~~
Cristin watched as the news filled her with the latest on King Benedique and Howie's condition. His Majesty is now in the recovery room after a mild heart attack but it was noted that he might be giving up the throne to his son soon. Those were only speculations but it appeared to be true as Kevin made a series of trips to the Parliament and attended political engagements here and there while his father is recuperating at the hospital.
Howie, on the other hand, is still in the ICU for being shot. Cristin kept on seeing Adrienne on the TV, coming to and fro the hospital to be at her fiancé's side. Howie's shot was terrible than the first one. He lost a lot of blood and needs a donor. Luckily, the Queen's cousin, Aurora Vasquez, has the same blood type and willingly shared her blood to the prince. But Howie still hasn't recovered from a chest operation to take out the bullet. He still hasn't wake up and his stats haven't changed.
The double disaster has been a shock to everyone in the family, worst being for the Queen. She was reported to have fainted on the day she reached the hospital to see her husband and son. Even the people on the streets were in somber ambiance. They feared for both men's safety.
And Cristin watched all of this while she is at her apartment, in London.

Kevin hugged Adrienne went he went to visit Howie at the hospital. The king went home yesterday, but Howie is still at the hospital. This time, he's in a private room and already awake after three days since his operation.
"I'm so afraid of losing him, Kevin. I love Howie so much," Adrienne cried. Kevin shushed her gently and led her inside the private room. Howie is awake and listening to what Nick was telling him.
"You're tiring Howie, Nick." Kevin said and patted Howie's knees in greeting. "I hate seeing you here, Howie."
"We don't have a choice, Kev. Someone really wants me dead." Howie said. Nick sat on the couch and listened to their conversation. "There's a mastermind behind all of this." He glanced at Nick. "I hope you don't mind, Nick, but we're also talking about the attempted kidnapping on you months ago." He added and received a groan from the young prince.
"Maybe, we can ask Ivan's help to the investigation," Adrienne suggested, referring to Howie's close friend who was the one that investigated Howie's real birth parents. She tightened her grip on his hand. "All of you have to be extra careful," she added. "Who knows? The culprit might just be someone close to you."
"Like Cristin?" Alex asked, who just arrived and overheard the conversation. Brian was with him who closed and locked the door behind them. Alex received a warning glare from Kevin. "I'm just stating a possibility here, Kevin. I'm sorry if I'm referring to Cristin in this situation. Isn't she the niece of Papa's former betrothed who committed suicide on the day Papa and Mama got married?"
"I knew about her connection with Lady Romina, Alex."
"So what if her motive is to take a revenge on all of us?" Alex pressed on and he noticed that Kevin was fighting hard not to react on the possibility of the situation. They knew how Kevin has fallen hard for his wife, and he's been miserable ever since Cristin left him.
"Why?" Nick asked. "What's her business with it? It's the past. As if it has made a connection on what happened to her life. We found out on the background investigation that she lived in peace with her parents, and Lady Romina's suicide didn't even make an impact on their family." Right after their father announced Kevin's engagement to a woman they barely knew, they conducted an investigation on her background. Kevin was aware of that as he financed the research.
"Wrong." Brian said. Everyone turned at him. "The investigation missed out something. Cristin has an older brother, Anthony, who also died on that day. His body was found near his Aunt Romina, swimming in his own blood. It was found out that he died from the bullet found in his head and it was either Romina shot him, or the young boy imitated what his aunt has done and shot himself. The latter is most plausible because the gun was on the kid's hand when their bodies were found." There were gasps inside the room as he said that. "If we are right, Cristin might be holding a grudge towards your family. She'll seek revenge to your father, but indirectly. She now turned to Kevin. He gave her more power now that she's married to him. Being the wife of the crowned prince, the possibilities, the opportunities and privileges are now endless. And Cristin might make a good use for that soon."
Kevin weakly sat on the couch beside Nick. He looked down, his arms hanging on his knees. Everyone looked at him, watching as he tried comprehending what they just heard from Brian.
"The last one I said was just speculations from the reports that Alex and I have received, Kevin." Brian added slowly. "But we shouldn't ignore the possibility..."
Kevin nodded silently. He couldn't look at them. "Man, we're in trouble..."
~~~
As Heir to the Throne, Kevin had a constitutional role for the country in which has started when he turned twenty-one. Stepping into that age has really marked a lot of changes in his life. He acquired the official role in the monarchy, his influence and wealth expanded, and he also got engaged.
The last one has been the most challenging of all.
His musings were interrupted when there was a call from Clint, his hired private investigator. He immediately answered it, as he couldn't contain his excitement. "Clint!"
"Your Royal Highness, I'm honored to be the bearer of the news. I found Lady Cristin."
Cristin smiled at the children who were on a playground area of the mall, oblivious to the people around who were busy for Christmas shopping. When she exiled herself from Arkadia, away from Kevin and Princess Monique, she went to London, rented an apartment and applied for a position in an architectural firm.
Cristin watched the children with a sigh. She could have a child if she didn't leave Arkadia. But she needs to do this. Kevin might be in danger if she stayed. She knew that the king's sister has led the recent violence towards the family. No one knows how wicked Princess Monique can be. No one knows what she is capable of doing, but Cristin is.
"I'm sorry if I'm late," A man, probably in his late twenties, said. Cristin watched as the man planted a kiss to a woman and to a little girl. He picked up his daughter as he and his wife walked away. Cristin watched them go. It's a cute picture of a father-daughter bonding when the man puts his daughter on his shoulders as they walked down the street. She never experienced moments like those with her own father. The Viscount has always been busy with either his work or with his gambling.
She wondered that if she and Kevin would bear children, if he is going to be a good father. She bit her lower lip at the thought. Thoughts of Kevin never left her mind. For sure, he's very mad at her and he's going to look for her everywhere. At first, she was afraid to be found but now, she didn't care. Maybe, she should stop hiding now and face the consequences of what she's done to him. And then she could tell him about his Aunt's evil plans to his family. She didn't care facing Kevin's wrath. She missed him anyway. She's ready to endure whatever circumstances will be given to her once the time comes.
Cristin started to walk towards another store to look at a displayed beige trench coat. It's beautiful. She has the money to buy it but now is not the time to shop. But the coat is beautiful...
"Like it?"
Suddenly, Cristin's heart began to race wildly when she heard that all-too familiar voice. She felt herself stiffen and slowly turns around. And that's when she saw her husband. Kevin now stood in front of her.
~~~
There was silence inside the car as it took the two in Pearl Castle, the official residence of the sovereign. When Clint informed Kevin that Cristin was in London spying on her, he immediately went there to look for her. Clint took Kevin to a mall and they found her strolling around and must have been deep in her own thoughts. He watched her bump into a couple of people around, and then stopped at the playground to watch the children play. She stood there for a long time. Then she watched as a family walked away. Could she be wondering of how her life would be if she stayed with him in Arkadia? Kevin shook his head in answer to that question. Cristin wouldn't picture them to be like that family who had just walked away. They were not in exact good terms when they got married and he didn't even know if she even wants children of her own.
Children. The thought of it made him smile. He imagined himself being a father and Cristin as the mother of his children. If only he could make things right.
Kevin took the cue to approach her as she leaves the place. Cristin was surprised when he found her in London and she thought that they'd stay in the hotel before flying back to Arkadia. But they left the city on the same hour through private plane.
That was almost three hours ago, and they still haven't spoken with each other. The ringing of the phone broke the silence. Kevin retrieved it from the pocket of his jacket and answered it. "Howie, yes?"
Cristin tried to remain her expression. Kevin and Howie are now in speaking terms. What happened? It seemed so much has changed since she left.
"Yes. Everything alright there?" Kevin paused to hear his brother's reply. "And Adrienne?" He glanced at his seatmate, whose gaze is fixed outside the window. "Thanks a lot, man." He set down the phone and silence grew once again. Cristin was surprised when Kevin grabbed her hand and looked at it. "Where's your wedding ring?"
Cristin looked at her husband. Her husband. It felt good thinking that she's married to him. But she wished that things were not as it is now. She slowly raised her other hand to reveal the ring she's holding on her palm. Kevin immediately took it and wears it on her finger. "Never take it off." He commanded. They locked gazes for a while until Cristin looked away. Kevin let go of her hand.
They reached the Pearl Castle and anxiety rose within Cristin. She didn't know why Kevin took her there but maybe, the king and queen wanted to see her. Are they going to punish her? Are they going to vanish her family from Arkadia because of what she's done?
Kevin watched as worry crossed Cristin's lovely face. Something's bothering her and he wished that Brian was wrong on what he told them about her connection with Lady Romina and a possible plot as payback for what happened to her aunt and brother. He's already out of the car but Cristin remained. He offered his hand to her and she took it without hesitation. He even felt her gripping tightly on his as they started inside the castle.

Everyone stared at Cristin when she and Kevin walked inside the throne room. The family is in complete attendance, including Brian and Adrienne, who stood beside and became their audience. Thankfully, only the family was present in the room. Cristin couldn't imagine anyone outside the family witnessing her humiliation.
"Papa, Mama, everyone, I want you to meet my wife, Lady Cristin of Deveraux," Kevin announced to his family. They all knew about his introduction, and his plans of trapping Cristin to know the truth of her real plans towards them. So, they are going to get on with the situation.
Cristin looked at Kevin in surprise. After all she's done, Kevin still introduced her formally to the family. She then, curtsied in front of the king and queen and Kevin's brothers.
Nick, who stood beside their mother's throne, watched Cristin. There was an awkward silence in the room. He glanced at Brian who smiled reassuringly at him. He couldn't tell everyone about Cristin and her connection with their Aunt Monique. He knew about Princess Monique's devilish behavior and he wanted to prove that she has anything to do with Cristin, as well. He had to get something to prove his hunch. He's been working on it for almost a year now.
"Please rise," King Benedique said. Cristin followed His Majesty as Kevin helped her up on her feet. The couple looked at the king. "I'm giving you the Saxton Palace as your new home. Tomorrow, we'll start arranging your church wedding and Cristin's formal coronation as a princess." His voice is monotone, and Cristin wished she could please them, now that she's part of this family. They all seemed intimidating for her.
Maybe because she is guilty for doing something to humiliate Kevin.
She didn't hear her father-in-law dismissing them but she heard him asked her, "Is there something that you wanted to say, my dear?" Kevin glanced at his wife. He could see her nervousness at being in this awkward situation.
"Yes, Your Majesty –"
"Papa. You can start calling me that now."
"Thank you for welcoming me to the family." She managed to say amidst a lump that has formed in her throat. She turned to Kevin who tightened his grip on her hand as she said that. Everyone still stared at her in silence; it's very nerve-wracking. Is this how they really are as a family? They intimidated her. Even Nick is keeping his eye on her.
"Let's go, Cristin," Kevin whispered at her. Cristin turned to him in wonder.
"I think that the two of you should talk," King Benedique suggested to his daughter-in-law. Hearing that, Kevin excused them and he pulled Cristin out of the throne room. As soon as the couple left, the stiff expressions were gone and exchanged conversations started among the family.
"Papa, you scared Cristin," Howie told their father. Alex chuckled.
Benedique smiled. "I did, didn't I?" He received a pinch on the arm from his wife.
"Bennie, how could you that to the poor woman? She's paled to death," Isabella said.
"I'm serious, Isabella." They quieted down and listened to him. "We are on a speculation here that she might be the mastermind of everything that's happening around us. She still deserved a warm welcome but we also have to show her that we cannot be taken down easily...if she's really has something to do with Nick's attempted kidnapping, Howie's attempted assassination or Alex's recent road accident. Notice that Kevin is the only one unharmed among you. Why?" Everyone was silent, so he continued. "Cristin may have better plans once she married Kevin that's why your brother is the only one left unharmed. Something bigger may be in store for him." He shrugged. "I'm sorry for talking that way but we have to widen our options why she would do this. If not her, we have to find out now who caused these."
"And if not her, who would rather have more motives?" Alex said.
Nick was about to speak up but they turned when the door opened and a guard entered. "Your Majesties, Lady Cristin fainted down in the hall. I was ordered by His Highness to tell that he quickly brought the madam up to his quarters." Everyone was surprised to hear that. They followed the guard out of the throne room.
"She must have been so scared," Isabella muttered.

Cristin woke up and the first thing she saw was the ceiling of the four-poster bed she's lying on. She glanced at her side and saw lacy maroon curtains draped around the big bed, softly being blown by the wind coming from the open door on her left. She began to wonder where she is until she realized that she's in Pearl Castle and probably in one among its many rooms.
She remembered what happened when Kevin introduced her. Terrified is the word when she stood there, and everyone was looking at her as if they were about to persecute her for what she has done to Kevin. Luckily, they didn't but as soon as Kevin almost dragged her out of the throne room, her knees grew weak and her body gave in until she felt herself blacking out.
'It's embarrassing,' Cristin cringed slightly at the thought. She stood up and went to find the bathroom. A few moments later, she felt somehow refreshed after brushing her teeth and washing her face. Just like in hotels, there is an extra brush lying on the sink in the bathroom along with the other toiletries, still unopened. 'Where's Kevin?' she wondered as she sat on the edge of the bed. She wanted to go out of the room but she doesn't know where to look and she dread to meet anyone from the royal family down the hall. She looked up when she heard a knock and a door opening somewhere. From the sitting room, adjoining the bedroom, Cristin saw Nick walked in.
"Uh, hi," Cristin immediately stood up. She glanced at her watch. "Good morning."
Nick raised an eyebrow. "You seemed different, Cristin. You're so full of anxieties and fear since I saw you yesterday." They remained standing within a distance from each other. "Is it because you're guilty for running away from Kevin right after you got married?"
"No." The usual strong countenance she's been posing returned but Nick somehow knew better that she's only faking it. "I have my own reason, Nick, and it's none of your concern."
"It is, Cristin. In case that you forgot, your husband is my brother." Nick said. He watched her grew silent and then, he continued. "But that's not the reason I'm here. I took the opportunity to talk with you while Kevin is on his way here from Bordeaux."
"He spent the night there? He left me alone here?" Nick just stared at her in silence. Cristin looked away. Silence means yes. It hurts to realize that her husband doesn't even want her, in any other way.
"Anyway, do you have something to do with the happenings lately?" Nick asked without preamble.
"What happenings?" The strong face remained. Nick doesn't know if he'll admire her for that.
"The attempted kidnapping, assassination plots, etc." Nick replied. "I want to know about your involvement with those."
"You're thinking that I was behind all of those, Nick? You knew better that I wouldn't even think about it." Cristin said.
Nick saw her on the verge of tears and she's trying to hide it as well. When will this woman realize that it was okay to show emotions? "You can't blame me from thinking otherwise, Cristin. You left something for me to think about. You left my brother after the wedding ceremony without any apparent reason. And I saw you talking with Aunt Monique many times since last year. Now, that's another story."
"Huh?"
"You heard it right," Nick smiled at her. But it never reached his eyes. It was like he's mocking her. And he looked dangerous with that expression on his face. "You seemed worried, Cristin. Don't worry. My lips are sealed. But maybe my family knew some part of your history. Are you taking your revenge on us?"
"No." Cristin replied. She met Nick's look. She felt him weighing her reply from his own judgment. Then he sighed.
"I'm watching you, Cristin. I won't stop until I found the truth." Nick said and turned to leave. Cristin watched him walk away in dumbfounded silence. When did that boy grow up? He's thinking beyond his age. She saw a man, not the boy from a boarding school.
"You're just wasting your time, Nick. I told you the truth." Cristin said but Nick never turned. She felt herself drained out after that. She sat back on the bed and that's when she noticed a piece of paper on the bedside table. It was a note from Kevin.

Cristin walked towards Kevin as he extended his hand to her. He arrived thirty minutes after Nick has gone to her room. A servant announced his arrival and told Cristin that her husband is waiting for him at the palace lobby. The hall is deserted when Cristin went out of her room. She didn't saw anyone from the royal family even when she reached the lobby. She saw Kevin standing there and while waiting, he's chatting with the palace guards, even laughing and joking with them. She secretly smiled. That's the different side of Kevin that not everyone knows about.
"Did you sleep well?" Kevin asked when she reached him. Cristin raised an eyebrow.
"Did you really have to rub it in, Kevin?" she retorted with a smile. "Where are we going?"
"I told you in the note. We're going over your parents' place. It's now your turn to introduce me." They went inside the car. As she sits beside her, he faced her again. "I'm glad that you used the perfume I thoughtfully bought for you. I know it's your favorite."
"And I thank you for that." Cristin replied. "What will happen after this, Kev?"
He is still looking at her, which makes Cristin uneasy. "We'll go to Saxton Palace to check our new home. You need to see some other things that need your attention. And then, we'll start arranging the necessary for our church wedding. Papa wanted it grand. You'll have your own ceremony by then as well, to be crowned as princess."
Cristin didn't reply on that. She wanted to tell him that she doesn't care about being a princess. She just wanted to be his wife, that's all. "Where is your family? I haven't seen them here."
"Papa left for a state visit in France, together with Mama. Howie went with Adrienne to arrange their own wedding while Nick and Alex were back to school." Kevin replied.
"I didn't know that you're already talking with Howie again. That's a good change, Kevin." Cristin saw him smile. Yes, something happened. It changed Kevin. She wondered what could that be.
Kevin kept his smile. The woman sitting beside him is his reason to change. "Lots of things happened when you were gone. You may already hear in the news about the recent happenings in my family. Papa had a heart attack, Howie was shot two times within a span of few months, Nick was tried to be kidnapped, and AJ had a supposed ambush weeks ago. I reconciled with my brother. Howie and I are doing well now." He turned to her.
Cristin didn't reply. If only Kevin knew about Nick's visit to her earlier. Nick made it clear that she's been suspected to be behind what happened to their family but she knew better who has more motives to do it. She sighed. And maybe Kevin's smile isn't true after all. He's also suspecting her and he's only trying to trap her. "I'm feeling quite apprehensive about meeting my parents. They will be very surprised that we're already married."
"I bet that they will be very happy. Their daughter is going to be a princess." Kevin sarcastically remarked.
Maybe, Cristin thought. She glanced at the view of the places they passes by. She missed her hometown. Childhood memories surged within, recalling the times when she used to play with her older sister, Margaret, at the wide front lawn of their house. Her sister is living now in the Netherlands with her own family. Her uneasiness grew when she saw her childhood home in sight. The Deveraux Estate still stood majestic at its country-style setting. Cristin had many memories there – good and bad ones. She didn't notice herself gripping tightly on Kevin's hand she unconsciously took until when her husband gave her a light squeeze. She turned to him. "We are here."
A few moments later, they were ushered inside the sitting room. Cristin watched as her husband didn't even hint any sense of apprehension in him as they waited for her parents to come. He looked rather comfortable and confident. "Let's pretend that we are deeply in love so that they will believe that this marriage is real." She told him.
"Our marriage is real. Fr. Kiefer made sure of that." Kevin replied. He looked at her. "And don't worry about me. I'm good at appearances. I know so do you."
"Oh, Kevin. I can't imagine myself putting up with that sarcastic attitude of yours." She lightly smacked his arm. Kevin just smiled and winked at her. They turned when the doors opened and Cristin's parents entered. They both stood up at the same time and with a smile, Cristin announced her objective without preamble. "Dad, Mom, I'd like you to meet my husband, Kevin."

For a moment, there was an awkward silence as Cristin's parents were taken aback by that announcement. There was an unexplainable expression on their faces. For the first time in her life, Cristin saw her parents grew concerned for her. After announcing that she already married the prince, Viscount Arthur Deveraux gave her a smile that never reached his eyes. She saw sadness there, as well as from her mother's. Is there anything that happened while she's gone? She didn't expect that reaction from them. They should be glad that their daughter has married a royalty.
"Cristin," Lady Alice went to hug her daughter. Kevin, then, shook hands with the viscount.
"We were surprised that you got married," Arthur started when everyone has settled down on their seats. "No one knew about what happened."
"We didn't announce it, Dad. We secretly married." Cristin replied and glanced at Kevin.
"We chose to have the private moments for a while, Sir. We all know how media will hound Cristin as soon as we declare our relationship. For now, we valued privacy until the announcement in a few days." Kevin added. "I'm sorry for not coming here sooner to ask for her hand. But I'm taking the opportunity now to ask you if I could fully take your daughter as my wife?"
Cristin bit her lower lip as she watched Kevin. He's looking directly against her father's gaze.
"Personally, I don't like you for my daughter, Your Royal Highness." Alice said, breaking off the silence. Cristin expected an outburst from her father for her mother's disagreement but none came. It's actually a wonder. They are the ones who insisted that she should grab the opportunity to be the crown prince's wife.
Kevin didn't say a word as he turned to the lady of the house.
"I've seen and heard of you for all these years and you don't exactly fit to be worthy as my daughter's husband. Cristin is a very nice person and I couldn't imagine her ending up with you." Alice continued. "You've been secretly betrothed to one another and yet, you still continued womanizing, partying and drinking hard. How am I going to trust you as a person to take care of my daughter when you wouldn't even show responsibility over your rank and status?"
"Mom..." She turned to her father.
"Don't worry, Cris. I agree with your mother as well." Arthur said.
"Things will change, now that I found myself to be responsible for my life. Cristin made me change." Kevin replied. "You may not trust me but I assure you that I won't hurt my wife, and I'll do anything to protect her and give her anything she wanted."
'Bluff,' Cristin thought. How could Kevin say those things to her parents? He's such a manipulator and liar as well.
"For eight years, I've grown to love her." Kevin even added and Cristin wanted to slap him hard on the face with all his lies, and how it hurts for her to hear his deception face-to-face.
"We're skeptic about this engagement thing," Arthur replied. "And now that you're married."
"But no matter what we have to say, we don't have anything to do now. You're married. And we can only wish you happiness and blessings." Alice said.
"But if we find out that you're hurting our daughter, we're going to take her and you're not going to see her ever again." The viscount said in warning. Cristin gasped at that tone. Her father is mighty serious.
"I am going to remember that, Sir." Kevin replied and then, everyone turned to her, expecting her to say something.
"You can count on him, Dad. I trust Kevin with my own life. He's my life, now. You may not believe it but we've grown to love each other after all these years." Unlike Kevin, she's telling the truth and she's speaking directly from her heart.

Princess Monique smiled wickedly as she recalled the wedding announcement from Kevin and Cristin earlier while she was in the Pearl Castle.
She stood on the front steps of the castle, along with her brothers and sister-in-law, as they faced the media. It was also the anniversary celebration of the king's accession to the throne and while the festivities were commencing, she was surprised when the First Family took the opportunity to announce Kevin's forthcoming wedding. Her other brother, Prince Philippe, Brian's father, was surprised as well. Even the media had no idea about it.
She didn't know how Cristin did it, but she made Monique proud. The woman obviously knows how to plan, she thought. Now that the wedding is on the way, revenge is initializing as well. She walked towards her drawers and pulled out one among them. She picked up a vial and stared at it with full determination of what is going on in her mind.
And then, laughter rang inside the princess's room.

Sister Michaela smiled to both women who were sitting opposite of her. She didn't expect to have visitors on a Friday morning; much more that it was Adrienne and Cristin: her future nieces-in-law. It surprised her more that it was Adrienne who took Cristin to meet her. It seemed that the woman has grown fond of her. Did she miss something here?
"Where are Kevin and Howie?" Michaela asked them. She already knew about the impending marriage after her nephews have gone by to visit her last weekend. Kevin and Howie were usually there to personally manage a secret charity foundation they founded with her. That's what Howie came for when she first met Adrienne. Howie never told anyone about it. They said that helping the poor and underprivileged should not be announced in public.
"They went off for the Olympics opening ceremonies in China, Sister." Adrienne replied. "We are here to invite you to our wedding." The woman seemed so excited; her eyes generated so much love towards Howie. Michaela is thankful that her hunch about Adrienne is wrong. Howie filled her with the details about Adrienne. He is lucky to marry a woman who loves him so much and he feels the same too.
"Your fiancés have invited me already. Of course, I'll be there." Michaela replied and turned to Cristin. "What's troubling you, my dear?"
Cristin seemed to wake up from her deep thoughts and looked at the nun. "Nothing, Sister." She smiled. "This must be just wedding jitters. It's not everyday that I'm going to marry a future king and I am so nervous when I saw my engagements. Can you imagine an inauguration for public restrooms at the downtown?" She laughed. "I'm looking forward to it."
"Don't worry. I've been to a groundbreaking ceremony with Howie on a garbage dumpsite to shovel a few amounts of soil for building a waste disposal outlet in the area." Adrienne shared.
Michaela smiled. "That's what I used to do before I entered the convent. But the important things we should remember among those things we do are the hard work and perseverance of the people who tried to make a difference for everyone's lives. We were there to encourage them, to inspire and support them in any possible way we can."
Cristin stared at Kevin's aunt. Sister Michaela and her twin, Princess Monique looked so much alike. They are twins and she couldn't believe how they could be so different from each other. She has seen the evil side and now, she's staring at the good side. She's staring at a Monique-look-alike dressed in a black religious gown covering her hair and has an angelic look upon her face. "Sister..."
Michaela turned to Cristin. "Yes, my dear?"
"I'm glad that you're Kevin's aunt. He's lucky to have you."

Queen Isabella smiled to the two young ladies she met down the hall. They were members of the housekeeping of whom she remembered were now graduating in some college. The ladies were almost of her son, Alex's, age. How time flies so quickly and the children she once nurtured are now all grown up and are off to make something out of their lives. The little kids who were used to play around with her down the hall are now going to get married, one is halfway on his university degree and the youngest will be graduating from a boarding school soon. All she's hoping now is that they would live up with the good values she tried to instill within them. And she couldn't ask for more.
"It's nice seeing you again, Isabella."
Isabella's smile faded when she heard Monique's greeting. She's particularly aware of her sister-in-law's indifference and contradiction towards her when Benedique chose her over Romina, his betrothed. "And so am I," Isabella replied. She glanced sideward and her security took their distance to give them privacy to talk alone. "Is there anything you need with my husband?"
"I'm not here for Benedique. I'm here for your sons," Monique replied.
"You may come with me, then. I'm on my way towards the Winston Room as well. Kevin and Howie are there." Isabella started down the hall once again. Monique walked alongside of her.
"How's the investigation to Howie's incompetent assassins?" Monique asked. "They missed it again this time."
"I have the lead. And I'm not surprised to learn who." Isabella replied.
"That's a pity. I hope whoever that is won't get caught. We need species like those on earth." Monique chuckled. "Incompetent bastards. And your sons must have nine lives to survive all of those. It must have been hard for you. You always worry. It's a pity."
Isabella casts a glare before stopping in front of a door. "I pity you as well, Monique. You never let go of your grudge when Benedique married me instead of your friend. It might have hurt you so much to think that it was all your fault and you have me as someone to blame for all the acts you've done. Things that even compelled Michaela to stay forever in the convent." She reached for the knob and opened the door before Monique can even reply.

Cristin watched as Howie smooth his hand along Adrienne's back while he tells something about the music he composed together with Alex. Oblivious to everyone, the brothers have amazingly gifted talents for music, even so with their cousins, Brian, Mike, Anastasia and Giselle. They could sing and harmonize. And they could play instruments, read and interpret notes as well as make new music and write songs. Cristin saw the hidden talents twice, during a private family dinner in which the King invited her personally. It runs in the family. Even their second cousin, Ayesa, a theater actress, is a very talented performer too. If they weren't royals, they could sing together for a living. Who knows, they could make it big in the music industry.
She watched as Adrienne turned to Howie, listening to whatever he says as if her life is depended on it. The two were inseparable. They exhibited so much love; ants would shy away from the sweetness that emanates from the two. And she envied them because her own love life is hopeless. And while she watched Howie and Adrienne shared a moment to stare at each other, she felt tears stinging her eyes. 'Stop dreaming and hoping for the impossible,' her thoughts reminded her.
"We should gather the guys some time and experiment the melody you're talking about on the keyboards and guitar." Kevin nodded at Howie.
"Thanks, Kev." Howie smiled. They all looked up when the door opened and their mother came in, followed by their Aunt Monique and two bodyguards. The others were left outside the hall. As soon as the elder women come in, the two pairs stood up from the sofas and greeted them with hugs and kisses. Cristin took all her strong will to kiss and hug Monique for the sake of appearances.
"As you know, I came from Mama yesterday to check on her health." Isabella started after introducing Monique out of proper courtesy although she felt it wasn't needed at all.
"How is grandma?" Kevin asked immediately.
"She's doing fine. She's the same stubborn woman you've known, don't worry." She smiled.
"We all know that," Monique said. "Mama always wanted to do things on her own." She smiled as well. Cristin wanted to roll her eyes. It was the queen who did it instead, and she's glad she didn't miss it. It seemed like the queen is not so fond of her sister-in-law.
"Anyway, she handed me over some family heirlooms in which I should give to my daughters-in-law." Isabella's smile went back to being genuine. She showed them two purple square boxes. She took something out on the first one and asked Cristin to come over. "This one is given to me by your grandmother when I was about to marry your father," she added towards her sons. On her hand is a diamond-studded sparkling necklace. The main design is the twisted diamonds incorporated among each other forming like an inverted crown. The diamonds are alternated with a few pieces of sparkling sapphires and jades on the tips of the crown. "I had this kept on a safe and Mama reminded me yesterday to pass this on to you. Pardon me when I almost forgot about it."
"It's beautiful, Mama." Kevin said but his eyes are on Cristin's face, which was rendered speechless.
"Part of the tradition," Monique said. "That's the infamous 'royal corona' given to every wife of the heir to the throne." Kevin took the heavy necklace and turned to Cristin. Their eyes locked for a moment before Cristin set her hair aside to let Kevin wear the necklace on her.
Cristin felt the heavy weight of the necklace when she wore it. But she easily ignored it when Kevin bent down to kiss her on the lips. It didn't last long but it somehow surged electricity within her with merely just that simple kiss. 'I love you', she silently thought.
A grin formed upon Monique's face as she watched her nephew and Cristin. Kevin has obviously fallen in love with Cristin. Things are getting well as planned...

Cristin set down her mobile phone and sighed. Kevin turned to his seatmate. They were on the way towards the Saxton Palace to check on the place that is going to be their residence as a married couple. "Anything wrong?" Kevin asked her.
Cristin looked at him. "I'm surprised you'd care. That's just my sister, Margaret, on the phone. Congratulating on my engagement. If she only knew..."
"If she only knew, then what?"
"She'll pity me." Cristin replied without any hesitation. She turne to the glass windows.
Kevin didn't say anything. It's been almost half an hour ride towards the Saxton Palace and that's the only moment that they said a word against each other. When the familiar fifty-room palace came into view, Kevin received a phone call – from Lois McFadden. Cristin turned to him when she heard his mere mention of the name. Is she going to throw a fit? He and Lois are now just friends and she only called to give him warm wishes on his forthcoming wedding.
When the car stopped, Cristin immediately went out and left Kevin behind. A butler greeted her when she gathered up on the front steps of the palace. Kevin finally caught up with her and gave her a secret warning glance before introducing her to the employees lined up to greet them. After the introductions were made, the couple was left with the butler, Corgis, to tour them on the important rooms of the palace. There were fifty rooms on it, including the function rooms, study and library and Corgis said that it wouldn't take them half of the day to tour everything for it was so big. The entire place is overwhelmingly beautiful and has a classic renaissance architecture.
"I can sleep at the adjoining room," Cristin said when Corgis left them at the master's bedroom at the end of the tour.
Kevin grinned as he bent closer to her. "Trying to resist the temptation, huh?"
"You wish," Cristin swallowed hard as Kevin moved more closely until their faces were mere inches apart. "Why did Lois call you?" She asked. In an instant, Kevin pulled away with a sigh. She finally managed to step back and Kevin noticed it. His arms went to her waist and pulled her closer again.
"Jealous?" he chuckled. Before Cristin would guess what to happen, Kevin's lips were immediately on hers, kissing her with deep urgency. His mouth was warm and firm, hungry yet promising. Cristin can only rest her palms against his chest and savor the moment that they were actually kissing. But her actions made Kevin thought that he was about to be pushed away and so, he stopped the kiss. Cristin looked at him, dazed.
"I remember it now. You said before that you're going to be a jealous and possessive wife when we get married. Now we are, and now I can see it," Kevin chuckled once again. He deliberately pressed himself against her to let her feel the effect of desire she's causing him. "Feel that, Cristin? I hate you for what you've done, but you can't blame me if I want to take this privilege of having you as my wife."
"You are my husband, Kevin. I guess we just have to do what we have to do. After all, you'll be needing heirs and I'm the best candidate for that matter." Cristin retorted. She saw Kevin's jaw clenched with that reply.
"You're right," Kevin growled and kissed her once again. She didn't try to hold back the delicious moan when Kevin's tongue flickered briefly before entering her mouth, tantalizing her all over. The sensations from the kiss were so overwhelming; she slightly bent back and felt his chest pressing against hers, his heart beating against hers. "I hope that this marriage won't be so obliging for you."
'It almost did,' Cristin replied in her thoughts. Part of her wanted to follow the tradition and the opportunity that the king has given her family, but another part of her just wanted to let go of Kevin and let him marry someone he would really love even though it would hurt her so much.
"I could get used to this, if that's what you want." Cristin replied instead.
"Then I now intend to give this country, heirs..." There was a hint of determination in Kevin's tone as he swept her off her feet and laid her down on the nearby bed.

Monique laughed after Cristin said her piece. "You expect me to do it just like that?" she asked the younger woman. Cristin just told her to leave the king's family alone. "You expect me to take orders from you? Who are you to tell me that?" Monique's face grew dim.
Cristin was scared in an instant but she knew better and not to show the princess that. She won't give Monique the pleasure to know her fear. "If you didn't, I'm going to expose your secrets with your daughters."
"Don't start with me, Cristin!" Monique's voice boomed inside the large Sitting Room. "If you want to come out here alive, you're not going to start with your threats with me. I couldn't care less now. Isabella and her sons will die. I'll make sure of that!"
Cristin stood up from her seat. "Then I'll make a way to prevent that. You have to go through me first!"
Monique chuckled. "You're crazy, Cristin. I knew it. You're falling on love with that useless man." She watched as Cristin neared the door. "Then I guess I have to go through your parents first as well, huh?"
Cristin stopped and turned. "That's unfair! Don't include them in the situation. This is just between you and me, and the king's family."
"Oh. Yeah, I forgot about that. But guess what? I've given them lots of money. I guess it is payback time." Monique laughed. Cristin glared at her for one last time and left the room. She messed it all up. What is she going to do now?

Nick smiled to the people he greeted down the hall as he made his way towards the palace dining room. It's Christmas and everyone in the family must have been waiting for him now. He is late, again. He still had to comfort Alexei, when his friend learned that Kevin is getting married. When Howie asked him before about who does Alexei fancies, he didn't say anything. He secretly likes his friend, but Alexei has an obvious affection towards his elder brother, Kevin. And when she learned that he's getting married, she ran to Nick for comfort. As painful as it was, Nick tried the best he could to make sure she's going to be all right.
"You're late," Alex said when he went out of the dining room to catch a smoke.
"Hold on to that smoke. We're starting dinner," Kevin said to his brother who followed the other one outside. He turned to Nick. "I'm hungry. What took you so long?"
"I've been to Alexei." Nick just replied and he didn't miss the exchanged looks between Alex and Kevin. He didn't say anything more. He's not in the mood. He entered the dining room and went straight to his mother to kiss him on both cheeks. "Merry Christmas, everyone. I'm sorry for being late. Christmas traffic, you know." He chuckled, concealing his jealousy that Alexei cried because Kevin is getting married, like as if she stood a chance to be given attention from his brother. He caught sight of Cristin sitting beside Kevin. She seemed distressed, and she tried hiding it with a smile.
King Benedique smiled at his youngest son. "Now that you're here, there's nothing to worry about. Merry Christmas everyone." He stood up and kissed his wife. Greetings were exchanged in the family. Nick saw Howie kissing Adrienne as well. Kevin gave Cristin a kiss while the latter blushed and looked at her husband with unexplainable expression on her face after their kiss. Something's bothering her, Nick thought. She was like a sister to him and knowing her after all those years made him able to read her actions well.
Their father took their attention as he raised his wine glass for a toast. "This is a celebration for every one of us. Let's toast for Nickolas' impending graduation, Alex's successful thesis presentation in the university in which he informed me was highly commendable," there were chuckles among the table as Alex laughed and scratched his head at the same time. "But really, Alex, I believe you can do it." He nodded at his son. "And there's also Howie and Adrienne's forthcoming wedding, and Kevin and Cristin's marriage. Isabella, I've never been more proud to have sons like them and I'm glad you're the mother." He grinned, as his sons began teasing them.
"And let's also pray that grandchildren will start coming soon." Isabella added. She raised her glass and everyone followed. They began drinking their wines.
"I'm glad to finally drink wine." Nick said. They laughed.
"Shut up, Nick. For all we care, you've been drinking when we weren't looking." Alex said. There was additional laughter on that.
"Hey, I'm turning eighteen. I guess I'm now entitled." Nick replied.
"Then I think you should also show Papa your new tattoo," Howie said. Nick's brothers chuckled as his face reddened when he saw his father's face. He glared at his brothers. They began picking up on him again.
"You got Alex influence you, huh?" Benedique told his son.
"It's just at the back, Papa. It's cool. You should see it." Nick tried to say. His brothers laughed now.
Just then, everyone turned when Cristin dropped her wine glass as she tried to clear her throat and grasp for breath. Kevin initially grew worried for his wife. He followed her when she stood up. She started vomiting and Kevin positioned his wife to bend her head down.
"There must be poison," Cristin whispered to Kevin before she passed out. She fell into his arms.
"Cristin!"

Nick silently sat beside Cristin's bed as he watched her sleep. She seemed to be already fine. When she passed out last night, Kevin nervously laid her down on the floor and performed artificial respiration. Minutes later, as called by the security, a medical team rushed into the dining room to give additional first aid on Cristin. She went back to consciousness but was very weak to even comprehend what was going on around. She was then, carried off outside to bring her to the hospital. The Christmas dinner was cancelled as the whole family supported Kevin all the way to the medical center.
Cristin was found to be poisoned by a household corrosive chemical found to be wiped on the rim of the wineglass she used. It wasn't in the wine they drank and obviously, somebody wanted to harm Cristin as well. She made everyone nervous last night. And from what happened, the speculation that she might be involved in a conspiracy to kill the royal family dissolved. She's now the subject of a murder plot as well. The question now lies - who would want them dead? Nick thought silently.
Nick reached out for his sister-in-law's hand and squeezed it gently. He saw her moan silently. "It's alright, Cristin. Nobody's going to harm you now." He whispered. Kevin was sent home for the meantime to change, as he never left his wife's side all throughout the evening. He'll be back in an hour to watch over his wife again. Kevin cared so much for Cristin and Nick wished she knew everything about that. It seems like the couple hasn't talked about it yet.
Nick looked up when the door opened and his Aunt Monique is there. He never moved in his seat as he looked at her. "I never thought you are close with Cristin, Aunt Monique." Nick started.
"I'm just concerned with your brother's fiancée, Nick. How is she now?" Monique asked in a somber and concerned tone. Nick wanted to believe it is true, but his mind dictates otherwise.
"She's amazingly fine now, Auntie. It isn't her time yet to die." Nick replied. He didn't try correcting her that Cristin is already Kevin's wife. She will be soon, to everybody's eyes anyway.
"Glad to hear that, Nick." Monique stood beside the bed. "I was out in the hall when I heard your bodyguards are about to come and get you."
"Why?" Nick let go of Cristin's hand.
Monique shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe something important has come up. Why don't you go and ask them?"
"I'll just wait here for them. Cristin needs company."
"I'll be her company for a while."
Nick shook his head. "I won't leave her here. I promised Kevin that I wouldn't leave until he comes back." And I won't certainly leave her to you, Nick added silently. He doesn't like what he's feeling towards his Aunt, no matter how blood-related they are.
Monique raised her eyebrows. Her aristocratic face turned back to the woman sleeping on the bed. She simply spelled arrogance and snobbery, Nick thought as he watched his aunt's facial expression. She's the very opposite of her twin, Sister Michaela. "Did she already wake up?" Monique asked him.
"Not yet." Nick replied, still watching his aunt. "Where are Stace and Elle?" He asked about his cousins, Anastasia and Giselle.
"They spent Christmas with their fathers' relatives." Monique replied to her nephew. She glanced at her watch. "I must be going now. Please tell Cristin my wishes that she'll be fine. I can't wait anymore, still got errands to do."
Nick stood up to kiss his aunt on the cheeks. "I'll tell her. Thanks for coming." But Monique didn't say anything more. The woman already left the room. As soon as she left, Nick began to smile in relief.
~~~
Cristin woke up half an hour later to find Nick staring back at her. "Where's Kevin?" she asked and winced at the roughness in her throat. She bit her lower lip and tried not to cry.
"It's okay, Cristin. You can cry." Nick said. "There's nothing bad about it."
Cristin turned away and let the tears fall. "I'm sorry for – "
"Don't talk for now, Cristin." Nick said. "Let me do the talking for the meantime. Kevin went home for a while to change and he'll be back shortly. As for Papa and Mama, they were so worried about you, even my brothers. Even me." He drew a deep breath first before he continued. "Will you be glad if I tell you that Aunt Monique was worried as well? She just left almost half an hour ago." Cristin looked at Nick. Her brother-in-law wiped the tears on her cheeks. Nick saw what he's looking for. He saw fear in her eyes.
"When you're well, I'll come to talk to you and clear something. Let me help you, Cristin. Something's wrong, I can sense it. And Aunt Monique has something to do with it."
Cristin bit her lower lip. "She's evil, Nick."
Those words were clear enough for Nick to understand. "It seems like Mama and I are the only people in the family who could see that," He told her. "I've known it a long time ago, Cristin. But what I want to know now is what does she has to do with you..." He paused to think about it.
Cristin watched his young, good-looking face came into deep thinking. Then his eyes widened moments later as if he realized something. He opened his mouth to speak but the opening of the door stopped him. No, can it be? Nick thought. She's sharing a conspiracy with Aunt Monique...and the princess wanted to get rid of her now...She's related with Lady Romina then Aunt Monique had a grudge against their family for the cause of Romina's death...
"Nick." Kevin has arrived. They saw him coming from the sitting room of the hospital suite towards his wife. He sat by the edge of the bed and smoothed her forehead with his hand. "Thanks for taking care of her, Nick."
"I – uh," Nick looked at Cristin with the same expression he had earlier. Disbelief, wonder, realization... "Don't worry about it, Kev." He stood up. "I have to go for now and leave the two of you alone." Nick bents down to kiss her on the cheeks. Cristin watched him leave, wondering how smart he could be. Then she turned to the person sitting on the edge of the bed.
>> 23
"Be careful, Kevin." Cristin tried to speak and once again, winced at the pain. She felt so frustrated right now. This is all Monique's idea, for sure. She wanted to get rid of her first before she could squeal anything to the king's family.
"Don't try to speak for a while, Cristin. It won't be good for you." Kevin said.
"But this is important," She said but Kevin hushed her down.
"Your health is important," Kevin said. "Let me talk first." Cristin shook her head.
"Pen...paper." She insisted.
Kevin bit his lower lip as he painfully watched his wife in struggle to speak. He stood up and requested someone outside to get him a piece of paper and pen. When he gets back, Cristin is sweating. He gave her the paper and pen and gathered some clean towel to wipe off her sweat. When he's done, he watched as Cristin writes something on the paper.
"The employees in the castle are being investigated after what happened." Kevin said after a long moment of silence. "I can't let this thing pass, Cristin."
Cristin looked up and met his gaze. "Why do you care?"
"You're my wife."
Cristin drew a deep breath. Why hope for the impossible anyway? Although she wanted to hear him say the three words, it will never happen. Kevin will never love her. "Here." She gave him the paper and watched him read it. His expression was blank, and Cristin couldn't tell what's going on in his mind. She wrote about his Aunt Monique and her plans for her brother's family.
"You conspired with Aunt Monique to destroy each one of us?" Kevin asked in disbelief. "She's the mastermind behind all of this? Tell me, Cristin," Kevin leaned closer and held her arm. "What else do you know?"
"She w-wanted to kill me first before I could say anything. When she's done..." Cristin paused to clear her throat. "She'll go after you."
"The security told me that she has come earlier. Did she talk with you?" Kevin saw her shook her head. "It seems like Nick guarded you well. Does he know anything about this?"
"I guess so. That's one smart kid." Cristin silently replied. Kevin nodded. He stood up. Cristin gave him a questioning look. "Tell...you more. Throat still hurts..."
"I'll take you out here and bring you home now to Saxton." With that, Kevin disappeared from the room.
~~~
"Where's Brian?" Kevin asked over the phone to Howie. He's in the balcony of the master bedroom. He cancelled his duties and never left Cristin alone. His wife didn't know that he's very much worried of her safety right now.
"He left for France today, Kev. He told me that he found Harry." Howie replied on the other line.
"He found Harry?" That surprised Kevin. They've been looking for Brian's older brother, Harold, all over the world, thinking where he'd gone to since he graduated college. Brian had his share of family dilemmas, and Kevin knew that Harry chose to disappear to free himself from his father's dictatorship over his sons. Brian remained but has been rebellious as well.
"I don't know what this means, Kev. I have a bad feeling." Howie said. "He just doesn't leave like that alone."
Kevin frowned deeply. His cousin needs them right now, and he has to face his own family dilemmas too. "I'll talk with Cristin first, Howie. Try calling Brian again and let's see what we can do."
"Okay," then the line went off. Kevin puts his phone back into his pocket and went back to the room. He saw Cristin staring at her food on the table, only half-eaten. He sat opposite of her in the coffee table.
"Don't you have something to do now?" Cristin asked him. Her throat's seemed fine now.
"Start at the beginning, Cristin. I want to know the side of your story." Kevin said, ignoring her question.
"You knew about my background, and how I am related to Lady Romina who was your father's former betrothed." Cristin started after drinking a glass of water. "My family's nearing poverty when your father chose me to be your betrothed. I guess the reason was to make up for what has happened with Lady Romina so my family was chosen again to be part of this tradition. Right after I was introduced to you, Princess Monique visited us and offered a proposition to my family."
"Including a monetary offer." Kevin said. Cristin nodded.
Cristin looked up and met her husband's look. "My family couldn't live up facing poverty after all those years we got used to living in luxury, especially my father who loves to gamble." She drinks her glass of water again. "I felt that I have a duty towards my family that I agreed to be a pawn to whatever your aunt planned for you. But lately, I wanted to back out. I couldn't do this anymore. That's why I decided to leave you after we got married. Because I knew that after that, your aunt will start killing every one of you. I couldn't afford to be the instrument of that evil plan."

"Should we believe her?" Alex asked skeptically. Kevin gathered his brothers in the Saxton Palace. He still couldn't leave Cristin, who's now in her room and resting. When his brothers arrived, he began to tell them about what Cristin told him. He wished Brian was there with them, but he's still in France and his mobile phone is out of reach.
"I believe her," Nick said suddenly.
"What do you know?" Howie asked him.
"I've known Aunt Monique's evil side since I was young. She used to glare at me whenever I came over to play with Stace and Elle. Sometimes, she would pinch me on the side when the bodyguards weren't looking. I also saw her before hitting her daughters. She's rude. And I won't be surprised hearing this now." Nick confessed. "The question is why would she want us to die?"
"She's holding a grudge against Papa for marrying our mom instead of Lady Romina." Howie concluded, shaking his head.
"That doesn't make sense, does it? That was a long time ago." Alex said. "And hitting Stace and Elle is against the law. Our cousins should have filed a lawsuit against their mother." He gritted his teeth with that thought. Alex is overprotective over his female cousins. Anastasia and Giselle didn't deserve a mother like Aunt Monique. He began pacing across the room.
"We'll get through it." Howie said. Everyone looked at Kevin who was silent all along. "Kev?"
"I was thinking about another thing that Cristin had told me." Kevin looked at them. He drew a deep breath before he continued. "Anastasia and Giselle weren't really her daughters. She just adopted them because she couldn't have a child. Anastasia is actually Aunt Michaela's daughter, while Giselle came from an orphanage. Aside from that, Aunt Monique is a lesbian. Lady Romina was her lover."
"Huh?" the men said all at the same time.
"Stace? How did that happen?" Nick exclaimed.
"Cristin dug into Aunt Monique's background. She wanted something to blackmail her when things didn't go as planned. These are what she found out. We all knew that Aunt Michaela had a boyfriend and has been pregnant before she submits into nunnery. When Aunt Michaela gave birth, Aunt Monique made it appear that her child died. Aunt Monique married her twin's boyfriend, and took Anastasia as her own child. She made everyone believe she's pregnant when she lived in Switzerland for a year and disappeared from the eyes of the media. She came back home with Anastasia. By that time, her brokenhearted twin decided to live the rest of her life in seclusion in the convent." Kevin explained. He saw disbelief in his brothers' eyes.
"Wait, if she's lesbian, then why did she married four times?" Alex asked.
"My speculation is money." Nick replied. "The youngest child was the least priority in terms of bank accounts and trust funds. Mama may have provided us equally but mine will always be the least. I could very well attest on that, as I'm the youngest one in this family. And I've studied Aunt Monique well enough for this year to notice that part of her necessity." He shifted on his seat. "I'm not after the family's wealth but I've come to realize that aside from the title as prince, I'm not considered as rich as you. I guess I really have to earn my keep, in which I would really look forward on doing anyway. And I don't have any problem with that. With Aunt Monique, it is. She married four times with the wealthiest men you could imagine."
"Her first husband, Aunt Michaela's former boyfriend, died in a car crash." Kevin added. "Aunt Monique successfully plotted that one. She received an immensely amount of inheritance from the Duke. Anastasia, his real daughter, received the trust fund from her father when she turned eighteen recently."
"I can't believe this!" Howie muttered, staring at his palm. "And just when I thought that I'm the only one adopted in this family," he tried to joke.
"We have to make a plan. I'll share to you what's on my mind. We have to know the truth." Kevin said.
"We have to investigate Aunt Monique as well," Alex added. "And if it's true that she's hurting our cousins."
"All part of the plan, Alex. Hear me out then..."

Kevin walked into the master's bedroom to find his wife, sitting on the bed and in front of a large book. Cristin looked up and saw him. She watched as he slowly walked towards her and sits on the edge of the bed beside her. "Where are your brothers?"
"They went home." Kevin replied, now staring at her.
"I didn't meet them, maybe some other time then." Cristin said. "Why are you staring?" Kevin shrugged as his gaze fell down to her lips. "Care to share what did you talk about?"
"Later..." Kevin closed the gap between them as his lips descended upon hers, slowly lingering the softness and sweetness of it. Cristin didn't hesitate to kiss her husband back and her arms were instantly around his neck, pulling him closer, feeling him more against her. "I'm dying, Cristin...I want you so much, and I might die if I don't have you right now."
The book was set aside as Cristin pulled her husband down on the bed with her. How incredibly delicious it was, feeling the warmth of his lips and tongue down her body, tasting her neck, her breasts, her belly and down to her womanly core. Cristin couldn't help but sighed aloud, even took a moment to wonder on how fast Kevin had both of them naked. But it doesn't matter now. She wants him too. She wanted to feel him deep inside.
"Kev..."
Kevin pressed against her, locking her eyes to his as he entered her body. Her lips parted in a soft gasp and Kevin covered them with his own. He began moving with her. It doesn't matter who surrendered in their own game and all that was important now is the wonderful feeling of having him against her. Cristin wished this moment would last forever. She arched when the world shattered around her.
Kevin collapsed on top of her, wrapping his arms around her. Cristin could feel her husband's breathing against her neck. It took a long while when she felt his breathing resumed to normal, his arms still around her.
"I love you." Cristin heard Kevin said in an almost a whisper.
"Huh?" Cristin stiffened and checked if Kevin is awake. But he had fallen asleep. 'He loves me. Could that possibly happen? Could that be true? Is it worth the wait after all?' She couldn't find the answers. She'll think about it tomorrow. She'll just take this moment with Kevin near her. She slid her hand around him, cradling him to sleep.
'I love you, too, Kevin.'
~~~
Cristin walked into the Sitting Room to meet Queen Mother Marguerite. It's been two weeks since she was almost poisoned and she has recovered. She was surprised when the butler announced to her in the library that the family matriarch, the Queen Mother, dropped by to visit her. She hasn't met the former queen yet and she hoped that their meeting would go fine.
She saw an old woman dressed in a pair of tailored purple suit sitting on the soft couch. Queen Isabella sat beside her. Cristin smiled and curtsied to both women before finding her own seat across the two.
"Now, isn't she looked wonderful, Mama?" Isabella asked her mother-in-law.
"She is. How are you now, Cristin? I heard about what happened and I arranged for this call as soon as I could." Marguerite asked.
"I'm doing fine now, Ma'am. Thank you."
"I was also informed about what you did after your wedding ceremony with Father Keifer." To Cristin's surprise, the former queen laughed. "That was a different way to make your man miss you, do you realize that?"
"No, ma'am." Cristin replied. She looked from one woman to another and they were both smiling at her.
"Do you love him?" Isabella asked her.
Cristin took her time to speak. The straightforward question surprised her and caught her off-guard. "The truth is I've been in love with him for a long time now. That's why I never gave up on him no matter what he does, or said to me. I thought I could face anything, accept him for anything. I love him not because he's a prince and he could provide me with all the luxuries I wanted. It's just that there's an unexplainable blissful feeling I had whenever he's near, and I know I couldn't live without it."
"But you still have to go away after you got married. Why?" Marguerite asked.
Cristin bit her lower lip. Will she tell the Queen Mother about her youngest daughter's despicable plans? Kevin advised her not to tell anyone for now, especially their parents. He seemed to have plans. "We weren't really in good terms when we got married. And I did it to get back on him, for everything he's done to me. He's a very stubborn, rude and irritating man in my own point of view."
"Kevin is the most temperamental grandson I've ever had," Marguerite said, "the most stubborn just like his parents. I couldn't blame you. Benedique acted the same when he learned about his engagement. Luckily, Isabella came home to rescue my son from his rebellion."
"And you permitted His Majesty to wed a woman who wasn't his betrothed?" Cristin asked.
Isabella smiled. "I realized the secret of the tradition when I married my husband, Cristin." The Queen Mother held her daughter-in-law's hand. The two seemed so close. "The tradition is just a mask to a lesson that a future monarch has to learn. The secret here is that every one of us has the power over our own lives, that not even a legacy would hinder us to achieve it. Our husbands made a decision that would affect their lives and other people's lives that's why the tradition was marked as a test. The tradition of engagement is a test of either they follow it or not."
"Each ruling sovereign undergone the test and they made their own decision." Marguerite added. "My husband married me because I was his betrothed. He was compelled to do it even though he doesn't love me. That was before. We've grown to love each other and enjoy each other's company. He never had other women. We shared a life with the world, we respect each other, strengthen our loyalty to the family and to the crown and that influenced the people around us. His decision turned out to help himself and the kingdom."
Isabella turned from her mother-in-law then to Cristin. "As for my case, Benedique ruled his way out from the tradition. He independently made his own decision and married me against the tradition of engagement. He had his own way with everything when he puts his mind to it. Remember when we adopted Howie? He faced the Parliament every day and received countless mocking, while some are praises, over his decision to adopt a foreign child who would be legally become an heir to this kingdom. No one would ever forget how Benedique stands up for whatever he believes in. And that's because he also believed for what was the right from wrong. Benedique is an emotional ruler, emotional but firm and fair."
"And now with Kevin, his decision to marry you was influenced by many things: family, honor and legacy. But above all these, he married you out of just pure love." Isabella finished.
Cristin smiled. "Pardon me, Your Majesties, but I don't think Kevin married me because he loves me..." But her mind was thinking otherwise when Kevin whispered 'I love you' after their lovemaking the night before.
"You're the one who said that you couldn't live without Kevin no matter how long you'd stand on the sidelines just to be with him. I know you knew that Kevin isn't the person who would follow anyone's rules nor just take whatever is laid out for him, just like his father. He had his own way as well." Marguerite told her. "And as I was informed, my son was smitten over you when he first saw you."
That was when Kevin approached him on his twenty-first birthday party and asked her for a dance. "I don't know, Ma'am." You're in denial, Cris, her thoughts protested.
"Then let me remind you about Matthew Pearce, shall we?" Isabella said. Cristin stared at her mother-in-law. "He's the last man who had an interest in you before you and Kevin got married. He is also the man of whom Kevin grew up competing with almost everything. When he entered the scene, Kevin feared over losing you that's why he needed to make the decision immediately. No one told him to do what he needed to do. He doesn't want to lose you. If he felt otherwise, he'd be more than glad to get rid of you now that Matthew was there and making a move but instead, he asked you to marry him."
"Then I guess, Kevin just won the competition over me then..." Cristin said, still skeptic about it.
"Kevin realized how important you are to him that he feared of losing you if he wouldn't do anything or take advantage of what he's privileged to do, to marry you." Marguerite said. "Wake up, Cristin. My grandson loves you. You cannot deny that fact."
Cristin stared at the queen mother. She felt Isabella's hand. "I guess you're right. Kevin must have really loved me."
Howie skid the Corvette into a curve and stepped into a full stop in front of the Castle Lawrence where his father and mother are staying until February. His eyes widened as the east wing are bursting into flames. Fire trucks were everywhere and they were trying to put down the fire.
"Papa! Mama!" He ran towards the palace. He pushed aside every security who tried to stop him from entering. Adrenaline rushed over him that even though they were much bigger than him, he managed to bring down all of them. He successfully entered the palace and ran towards the east wing. His bodyguards, on the other hand, followed suit.
Thirty minutes later, the flames fully engulfed the east wing, as well as the south wing. Fire alert went to the highest level as almost every fire trucks in the nearby district and towns helped perish the fire.
Adrienne sped her car down the front gates of the palace and went out as soon as it stopped. The flames that were consuming almost the entire castle mesmerized her. She received reports that Howie has gone inside to get his parents but still hasn't come out. "Howie!"
~~~
"How is she?" Kevin asked Cristin when he saw his wife inside the guest room of the Pearl Castle. The fire has been washed out in Lawrence, and the marshalls are now looking for any signs of the King, the Queen and Howie. Adrienne tried to enter the palace as well to look for her beau but was stopped by the security. She was in intense panic, screaming Howie's name, and really hysterical that the medical team had to sedate her.
Kevin and his brothers arrived a few minutes later. They watched weakly as the flames almost eat up the castle. Nick was crying, while Alex stood shocked. Kevin's face remained strong for his brothers.
"She's still unconscious. They must have put too much on her." Cristin replied. Her eyes welled up with tears at the night's tragedy. "Your parents don't deserve to die like this, Kevin. So does Howie." Kevin gathered her into his arms and hugged her. He didn't say a word. They haven't talked much to each other since that night of passion. Cristin cried on his shoulders. He can feel her sorrow over what happened.
They both turned when his personal secretary, Robert Drew, announced himself and went in. "Your Royal Highness, the parliament has called for an emergency conference tonight for your accession on the throne. I respect that I have to hear first what you have to say, Sir."
Kevin frowned furiously. "Cancel the conference. I won't be king, until we don't find my father, my mother and Howie!" He let go from Cristin's embrace.
"Yes, Your Royal Highness," Robert replied.
"And tell them that I'll be taking the emergency powers as a temporary sovereign. Tomorrow, arrange for a press conference. I'm going to put down names on who would have done this, after I receive my investigation tonight with the investigators." Kevin's long strides led him towards the large glass windows and saw a swarm of media outside the official palace of the monarchy.
Cristin watched her husband and she ached to touch him to soothe his own pain. He looked as if he couldn't believe that everything is happening, that three of his loved ones were probably dead.
"Everyone will have to wait if I'll be the new king or not, tomorrow..." Cristin and Robert heard him say.

The next day, the 'Lawrence Fire', as dubbed by the media, is all over the headlines almost everywhere in the world. There were scorched bodies found and were still being identified if it were of the three members of the royal family. Arkadia is in mourning over the tragedy that has fallen for their beloved king and queen, as well as for Prince Howie. They were declared gone at six in the morning. Leaders from different countries called in to send their condolences, Aurora Vasquez immediately flew in to mourn for her son, and Adrienne was in a state of shock. She never speaks ever since she woke up that morning. Cristin never left her side for fear that she might turn suicidal.
Kevin looked at Alex and Nick. They have been quiet in a long time. "There's no turning back, gentlemen. We're on our own." He told them.
The press conference is at eight in the morning. Kevin and the rest marched towards the large boardroom in the Pearl Castle where the media are now waiting. He was immediately granted the emergency powers as the temporary king until the Parliamentary will set the date for his accession.
A sea of faces and flicking of cameras acknowledged the royals when they stepped on the stage and faced everyone. They looked sullen, and they all wore matching black suits. Silence overwhelmed the room as Kevin went to the podium and cleared his throat to get everyone's attention.
"Last night was a night of horror for every one of us. Castle Lawrence was suddenly engulfed into large flames. Unbelievably, fire started from an overheated electronics in the study room of the castle's east wing. That was the report of one of the witnesses who survived but we have evidences that it was arson. And as for what happened, I'll begin to mention out names of those people who are suspected to be involved in this despicable arson. As I speak, they are being invited right now by the police officers for indefinite detention." His cold, commanding voice echoed within the confines of the large boardroom.
There were buzz around the boardroom when Kevin said that. "Everyone, listen up. First on my list, Her Highness Princess Monique." And with that, the crowd gathered up a noise as random questions were thrown at Kevin. But Kevin continued with his list.
Alex and Nick looked at each other then to the crowd. The security team went on alert as the media reacted from what Kevin has mentioned earlier. The future king is condemning his own aunt for killing his parents and brother. This is a surprising twist in the history of the monarchy of Arkadia.
~~~
Cristin's eyes grew wide as she watched her husband on the TV mention his own aunt's name among the suspects without any hint of fear. "Kevin, what are you doing?"
She glanced at Adrienne who is crying once again, rocking herself back and forth on the large bed in the guest room. She feared that the woman might have a nervous breakdown after what happened to Howie. If the same thing goes for her, she doesn't even know how to live without Kevin either. She went to her and hugged her, as her attention turned back to the TV.
"Why the accusation with your aunt, Prince Kevin?" A reporter asked when Kevin has finished and opened the floor for questions.
"A palace complete press statement will come shortly after the conference." Kevin coldly replied. His face was focused on the television and he is the picture of a man with a raging temper that might come out any minute from now. The reporter, who asked, backed off in fear from him. Kevin has that commanding presence to everyone in the room. Another series of question bombarded him; all were about his accusation to his own aunt.
"He looks good. No wonder, he is suitable to be this country's king."
Both women gasped and looked up from that familiar voice. Cristin couldn't believe what she saw. Coming into the room is King Benedique holding Queen Isabella's hand, and Howie, the one who spoke. Keith, Kevin's best friend, followed behind and winked at the two women.
Monique's eyes widened as soon as she heard what her personal secretary had just told her. There was a team of police officers outside the mansion and were looking for her.
"What do you want?" Monique demanded when she got out and faced the officers in uniform.
"Your Highness, we are here to invite you for an interrogation with regards to the Lawrence Fire last night." The leader of the pack said.
"I don't have anything to do with that. That's my brother there." Monique said and her eyebrows rose when a piece of paper is handed to her. "What is this?"
"You have to come with us, Your Highness. That's the legal document permitting us to do so."
Monique read what was written and her eyes shot indignantly. A warrant of arrest! "You cannot do this to me! Who ordered you to do this to me? I'm a princess! I'm the king's sister."
"It's the Prince Regent who decreed the arrest, Your Highness. It is His Royal Highness Prince Kevin who told us to do so."
~~~
Adrienne saw her fiancé and cried in relief. Howie gathered her up to his arms and they kissed more than anything passionate that Cristin could imagine.
"I thought I lost you, Howie. I'm going insane thinking you're gone from me forever." Adrienne sobbed on Howie's chest. He hushed her and led her to the adjoining room to talk in private. When they left, Cristin went to hug the king and queen. Tears fell down her cheeks.
"Kevin never told me about this. What has happened gave me a full shock and I couldn't accept the fact that you'd be gone in a very undeserving way," Cristin cried as King Benedique hugged her. Isabella cried as well.
"We're fine now. This is all part of the plan. Let's wait for Kevin here to explain to you everything and tell us what to do next." Benedique told the younger woman.
"Forgive me, Papa, for what I did with Kevin, and for what I've caused to put you in danger. This is my entire fault. I should have told you earlier." Cristin said.
"Don't blame yourself, Cristin. I know your reason." King Benedique said. "I've known in a long time and although I was worried of what you could have done, I still believe that the magic I've seen on one special night will cover up for everything that has happened."
"You knew? M-magic?" She looked from one person to another. The king didn't have the chance to reply when the doors ceremoniously opened by the security and the three princes came in. Cristin took a step back from her father-in-law.
As soon as they saw their parents, they smiled gratefully. Each one kissed their father on the hand, and hugged and kissed their mother as well. Kevin turned to Cristin and stared at her. No words came between them as he hugged her. The spell broke when the king called for Kevin.
"Aunt Monique should be in the police headquarters any minute now. Somebody will call me to inform." Kevin told his father. There was sheer determination written all over his face. The door opened once again and Anastasia and Giselle came in. They were surprised when they saw their aunt and uncle very much alive. Giselle even had to step back from uncertainty.
Alex went to his cousin. "They're alive, Elle. Everything's just a cover-up."
"You had Mom arrested," Giselle said to Kevin.
"We have to do what we got to do," Kevin told his cousin. "It's a good thing that Nick and Cristin told us what your mother has been doing to you. I can't believe that she could initiate on poisoning you either." He added, recalling the last time when Giselle was rushed into the hospital due to food poisoning. Giselle's eyes filled with tears.
"That's why she couldn't love us," Anastasia said quietly. "She's not my real mother, but her twin is." Nick went to hug his cousin. Cristin bit her lower lip. The family cared so much for each other. And it would have been ruined if Monique would continue and be successful with her plans. She hoped that everything would be settled soon.
Everyone turned as the doors opened and the unexpected came in.

She gasped when she saw her brother alive and well, so does Isabella. The large number of secret agents and security all over the Pearl Castle overwhelmed her when she got there. She didn't watch the press conference and she couldn't tell whatever happened. Where's Howie? She turned to the side when she saw him coming out with Adrienne.
"Aunt Michaela!" Howie exclaimed, the one who broke the silence.
"Whatever has happened here?" Michaela asked everyone. She decided to go to the castle as soon as she heard that his brother, sister-in-law and nephew was declared dead early that morning.
"It's a long story, Michaela." Isabella replied and hugged her. "I missed you." Everyone hugged and kissed her except for Anastasia who just stood and stared at her real mother. Tears started running down her cheeks.
Benedique cleared his throat. "Michaela, I am honored to introduce to you your daughter, Anastasia." Michaela's smile turned into a surprised wonder as she turned to the young woman she'd known to be her niece.
"Stace?" She bit her lower lip. Her tears began to fall. She opened her arms wide as she welcomed Anastasia who went towards her.
"Mom..."
~~~
Kevin uncomfortably sat on his father's throne as he waited for the arrival of his Aunt Monique. As the heir apparent and temporary sovereign from his own decree, he ordered a house arrest for her, prohibiting her contact to the outside world. It's been two days since the fire has occurred and nobody knows that everything was just a cover-up. Except the security team, of course, of whom they conspired with the plan. They were vowed to secrecy.
He heard a quiet sigh beside him. He looked up to see his wife standing by him. She didn't notice herself gripping tightly on the armrest of the throne, as if she dreaded to face Princess Monique. Her knuckles turning almost white. They heard that Monique were mighty furious for the treatment bestowed on her. And they were expecting quite a temper once the princess entered the throne room.
Finally, the pager announced her presence.
Monique came in and stood in front of Kevin and Cristin. The people inside discreetly left the throne room to give them privacy. Monique held her head up high and her eyes demanded explanation for the humiliation she had from the order of her arrest. "It is against the law to detain me when I don't even know what my crime is." She started.
"It was already informed to you, Aunt Monique, as what I've been told." Kevin replied.
"Arson, attempted assassination, kidnapping and murder, including child abuse –"
"Among many other things, Auntie." Kevin said. He stood up. "We didn't do anything to you to make you feel resentful."
"It's all your father's fault, Kevin. If he didn't marry your mother, Romina may have still lived up to this day." Monique replied, casting a slicing glare to Cristin then back at Kevin. "Your mother is a whore, and a social climber. She took every opportunity she had just to be married in to royalty."
"Don't you dare talk to my mother like that!"
"Why? She's a bitch. She's a wasteful piece of shit. And she's dead. Good for her, and for your father. I don't have anything to do with the fire but I'm glad that it happened. I don't have to waste any more of my time plotting how to kill her." Monique laughed. Cristin tried not to flinch. "I don't care if you send me to prison. My work here is done!"
"If that's what you think it is." Isabella said from behind her. Monique turned around. Her eyes widened when one by one, each member of the royal family entered the throne room. Isabella and Benedique walked side by side. Michaela followed behind, each holding Anastasia and Giselle's hand. Howie, Alex, Nick and Adrienne were at the last.
Monique stood still; felt herself grew stiff when she saw them. It was like having a nightmare, but this time, she's awake. Her family tricked her and then humiliated her by issuing an arrest for her. And Michaela is here, reunited with her real daughter. "This is a conspiracy!"
"It is." Benedique said, stepping forward towards his sister. "You should have told me your problem, Monique. Resorting to revenge and violence is not the right way."
"Don't tell me what to do, Benedique! You ruined my chances in life. You killed Romina!" Monique stepped backward, almost getting close to an armored statue behind her.
"I didn't. It wasn't my fault that I've chosen love over tradition." Benedique replied.
"Stupid love it is. You sacrificed the life of another just to marry that trash!" Monique glared at Isabella. "You're going to regret what you've done to me. You'll even regret you've ever been born, Isabella. You and your pathetic sons!" She turned to Kevin and Cristin. "And your future children. I'm going to make sure of that."
Cristin unconsciously grabbed Kevin's arm when she received an icy, menacing glare from the angry princess. "But I'm going to make sure you won't, Aunt Monique." Kevin answered back.
In an instant, Monique turned and pulled out the metal spade from the armored statue. No one was able to move as she had it immediately pointing against Kevin's throat.
"Kevin!" Isabella screamed for her son's safety.
"If I see anyone move, this blade," Monique pressed it deeper into Kevin's throat, causing it to redden, "is going to slit Kevin's throat. Even you, Kevin. Don't attempt to move that hand of yours. The same thing goes with you, Cristin. I'm not yet through with you, traitor!"
"What do you want, Monique?" Benedique shouted as his nose flared and face grew deep red in anger.
"Isabella's life." Monique leered as everyone gasped. She pressed the blade even deeper when she saw Kevin's brothers and cousins moved and stood beside their father. "His life or yours, Isabella."
"Don't listen to her, Mama." Kevin winced in pain as he could almost felt the blade about to slice his Adam's apple.
"Don't play a hero, Kevin. You're not as worthy like your father to be king. It won't be everyone's loss if you die anyway. So did you mother's life!"
"Mom! Please don't do that." Giselle cried out. She was already sobbing.
But Monique ignored her. "Isabella. Better decide now."
"No!" Cristin screamed as she pushed her husband down with her on the carpeted floor. In an instant, they avoided the sharp blade that attempted to lunge in to Kevin's throat. Surprised by Cristin's action, Monique was caught off-guard by Alex's quick move on grabbing the spade from her. Nick caught her hands and held it firmly.
"No!" Monique cried. "No!" Howie rushed to the door to call their security to go inside the throne room. Family confrontation is over. There's nothing they can do for Monique.
Kevin stared hard at the earth on his feet as he and the rest of the family were at the Pearl Castle's public enclosure where the royal family is gathered for an afternoon tea. Brian was already home, bearing the news that he already found his brother. They found out that Harry has lived in France, working as a curator among the number of museums there, far from the life he left behind in Arkadia as a prince and heir to an earldom.
It's been almost two weeks, too, since the great confrontation has happened. Their Aunt Monique had the surprise of her life when she realized that the king and queen didn't die at the fire, and it was all just a trap for her. Monique was found guilty of the crimes identified to her and her own brother issued an immediate order to incarcerate her until a punishment from the justice council will be decided upon.
It's been almost two weeks too, since the world learned that the King and Queen of Arkadia, as well as Howie have survived the fire. A festive mood lasted for almost a week, and it was like a late Christmas celebration for the entire royal family. Michaela also decided to leave the convent and to take all the time she had lost with her daughter, Anastasia. She will be also taking Giselle under her wing, and take care of the young lady as well.
Kevin looked up when he heard his mother laughed beside his father. Alex was joking about something and their parents were really buying his joke. He shook his head as he smiled.
The rays of the sunlight strike him on the face and as he shielded his hand, he noticed the wedding band on his finger. Cristin. He turned to the woman beside him. He had so much to make up to her. He didn't know where to start. She saved his life.
He initiatively took her hand. Cristin looked at him in surprise. They stared at each other for a long time, and he felt her hand reaching out to touch his face. Kevin pulled her into him and embraced her. Things have been settled except their marriage. He should start doing something about it now.
Everyone in the family watched as the oblivious two shared a special moment together. Joke time with Alex is over. The couple took their attention. "The magic is still there after all," Benedique whispered softly to his wife as they watched Kevin and Cristin together.
~~~
"Look at that, squirt! You looked like a dork."
Cristin watched as Alex made of fun of Nick's face shown at the headlines of a newspaper published more than two weeks ago. It was he in front of the Castle Lawrence and crying, or rather acting that he's crying.
"Man! I looked like a doofus here." Nick laughed. His face on the papers was full of tears, and let's say, has a bad case of running nose as well. He took the acting very seriously to be believable.
"I can't believe that you planned this all along," Adrienne said. She's cuddling close to her fiancé. Howie kissed her for the nth time since they found the couch.
"It's too bad that the guys didn't tell us their plans and then there we were, getting ourselves crazy about what happened." Cristin seconded. Kevin wasn't in the Sitting Room with them, as he went to France with Brian to see Harry. "You should not do it again." She told the three men.
"Well, we saved Cristin in the process." Nick said. He, Howie and Alex nodded with a smile.
"Cristin, I'd like to ask," Alex started, now sitting beside his sister-in-law. "How are the things going on between you and Kevin?"
"AJ..." Nick whispered in a warning.
"Hey, Nick. I got to do what I've been itching to ask anyway."
"Things are fine between us."
"You're kidding!" Alex exclaimed in a horrific expression. Cristin smiled. "Seriously, Cristin. When you ditched him on day one, he was so mad and he threatened to get back on you, to punish you when you come back. Now that you're here, I can't seem to see any thing about what he'd said before."
"I don't know what his plans were but all I can say now is that we're civil with each other." Cristin said.
"I don't think I could live with that," Adrienne said, as she and Howie kissed again.
Nick rolled his eyes towards the couple and their kissing marathon. "I don't think so, too, Cristin. Besides, what Alex wanted to hear from you are about what Kevin has been doing with you. Is he hurting you? But of course, you wouldn't tell us anything so let me rephrase that. Did he already show you that he loves you?"
"In what way would you like to hear it, Nick?" Cristin asked him back.
Alex laughed. "Cristin, we already know what do husbands and wives should be doing but aside from that...you know what I mean."
Cristin smiled. She never knew that Kevin's brothers could be so prying. "I don't know what to tell you. Because all I can say is that I can feel that he loves me. But after all that has happened, I'm not sure if I have to be confident about it." Cristin replied. She actually felt insecure about her stand between herself and Kevin. But what she could do then? She's afraid that once her feelings will reveal, her husband might just laugh at her. Or may take advantage of it. "But you see, I have faith in him. If I judge it from the things that happened recently and by the way I saw how he's treated me, maybe I have the chance after all. Maybe he loves me too."
"You're a gem, Cristin. I wished Kevin would realize it before it'd be too late for him." Howie said.
>> 33
33
Cristin stared at her wedding band for a long time now. The ring signifies many things for her, most of it as love. And all she only hoped for is that Kevin would love her back. But it would be just too painful to hope for something impossible.
She remembered what the Queen Isabella and the Queen Mother Marguerite have told her the last time. Kevin married her out of pure love, and that he is as stubborn as his father and he wouldn't follow anyone's dictation for his own actions. He'll never permit anyone to make him do things against his will. Marrying her is not against his will. He's just too much in love to be blinded from it that he had the tradition as an excuse for doing it, and never realized it until Matthew Pearce came along in the picture.
Cristin wanted to believe that, but it's better not to hope at all. Who is she anyway? Her duties are merely just to pose as his wife, be the mother of the future heirs of the kingdom, and just like that. She blinked back the tears from falling. Maybe this is her mission in life after all.
"I hate seeing that expression on your face, Cristin, looking as if you carried the burden of the world on your entire shoulders." Kevin said beside her. She didn't notice him approached her from across the ballroom where they are celebrating Nick's eighteenth birthday.
"This is nothing. I'm just tired," Cristin replied and look away. "The groundbreaking ceremony earlier really exhausted me, that's all." And I am guessing that I'm may be pregnant, she silently added.
"And so I've heard. I was told that you got dizzy and had to leave early. I'm sorry if I wasn't there earlier. You knew that I'm at the Parliament." Kevin said.
Cristin nodded. "I understand."
"You always understand."
Cristin faced him. "That's what I am expected to be, isn't it? To be understanding and patient as your wife." She watched as her husband's face grew dim. Did she say anything wrong now? She's just telling what she has in mind. They stared at each other in a while before someone cut them off. They turned to see Nick, with Anastasia alongside him. Kevin scowled at his brother. But Nick wasn't intimidated.
"This is my special day, Kev, so don't go on bullying my sister-in-law in front of everyone." Nick whispered at him. Kevin turned from the young man, to his cousin then to his wife.
"I'm not bullying her, Nick. As you can see, you're interrupting a very important conversation."
"What's important with our conversation?" Cristin asked him. Kevin took her hands and looked deep in her eyes.
"That I've been meaning to tell that I love you, Cristin."
"Huh?" There was disbelief across Cristin's face after Kevin said it. His words caught her off-guard while Nick and Anastasia were smiling as they walked away. Their mission is done.
"I love you, for a very long time now." Kevin kissed her hands. "I'm sorry for my shortcomings, and everything I've done wrong.
"Please, Kevin. Don't do this to me..." She saw the hurt from Kevin's eyes, and bit her lower lip. Kevin tightened his grip on her hands when she tries to pull it away.
"Do what?"
"Making me believe that you love me. It hurts."
>> 34
34
Kevin took his wife out from the ballroom and into the hallway. "Please don't tell me that you love me, making me believe it's true. It only hurts." He heard her say.
Kevin drew a deep breath and pulled Cristin to him. "I'm not saying this to make you think that I love you, Cristin. This is for real. I love you. Let me be your slave. Let me show you what I can do and how much I can love you. Let me give you everything you need. Let me make you happy." Kevin said as his own voice crackled and he is on the verge of tears. "I love you, Cristin. I'm sorry before. With all the things that has been happening to me: the succession of the throne, threats with my brothers, this tradition, I was afraid."
Afraid? Kevin was afraid? "What did I do to make you afraid?" Cristin asked him.
"I'm afraid of losing you if I made the chance of giving it all up and just love you. I'm afraid that when I'm all too consumed with that love, I may not be able to protect you the way I tried protecting my family. I couldn't afford losing the people I love. I've been very afraid. I had so many things to fear of, so many things to think of. Being the heir is pressuring me. When you left, I never thought that I almost lost you. I'm a coward, Cristin. I've been in love you with you for a very long time and yet, I didn't do anything to make it secure, to let you know how much I really care for you. I tried denying it myself. I'm not even sure if this is true love." Kevin looked straight at her. "But the moment I learned the true meaning of love, I could only see you. Because for me, love means only you, Cristin."
Cristin gasped, staring back at him and trying to absorb the things he said. She could read those strong emotions in his intense eyes.
Kevin loves her.
"Cristin..."
Cristin raised her hand to stop him from saying another word. It's been overwhelming and she needs time to digest the words that are filling her mind. Kevin gave her time. When she finally had the guts to face him again, she was glad that he was still there. He took her hand and held it tight. She couldn't help the tears from falling down her cheeks as Kevin softly wiped away every drop. "You didn't lie to my father and mother about taking care of me?"
Kevin shook his head. "I'm a man of my word, and I'll never tell things when I didn't mean it, Cristin. And I know about your parents' dilemma as well, which has compelled them to pressure you on conspiring with Aunt Monique." He kissed her slightly on the lips, never minding the guards who stood nearby on their posts. This is his wife, and he didn't mind them telling others what they are witnessing right now. "I'm willing to help your family, to get back on the right track once again."
All Cristin could do is cry and hug her husband. "It's been a long time. I'm glad that it's worth the wait, Kevin..."
"You love me for a long time, Cristin?"
Cristin smiled, beneath those tears in her eyes. "Have you ever wondered why it's been almost eight years and yet, I'm still here standing by your side awaiting your decision if you'll marry me or not? I love you, Kevin. And if you decided not to marry me, that's the only time I'll let go knowing that you'll be happy with someone you love. I almost gave up on you. But you married me, and I've been hoping against hope that you love me too, or I'll try making you love me. I'm a desperate and pathetic woman, Kevin. But I love you."
"I almost lose you then." Kevin said then took the big step into leaning down to his wife and kissed her fully on the lips. Cristin kissed him back. "Will you marry me, Cristin?"
"I'm already married to you, Kevin."
"It feels so good to finally found my way home with you, Cristin. But let me marry you in the best way that you've ever dreamed of." Kevin gives her butterfly kisses all over her face. "Let me announce to the world that you are my wife. Let me give you the grandest..." He stopped when she put a finger on his lips.
"Having you as a husband is grand enough, Kevin. Having you forever in my life is the best that I've dreamed of." Kevin smiled. They never let go until when the door from the ballroom opened and Alex comes outside.
"Okay. That's a wrap, Cupid and Psyche. We need you inside for the Happy Birthday song," Alex winked at them, and was laughing as he went back inside.
"Birthday song? That's way too old for Nick, Kev." Cristin said.
Kevin laughed. "Cristin, when you married me, you have to know certain traditions in which I and my brothers have formulated. Besides, this isn't just any ordinary song. We're singing a Capella. Come. I want you to hear it. Ayesa will be singing soprano with us." Kevin said, referring to their cousin, who's a theater actress. He kissed her once again until it was Howie who went out to get both of them.
"Pause it for now, lovebirds. We need back-up on the piano, Kev."

Epilogue
Cristin looked up from the crib when she heard her husband coming inside, tagging Nick along with him. She stood up to meet the two.
"Hi, Cris. It's so nice to see you. I can't find any more good-looking women in the university as you do," Nick said and kissed his sister-in-law on both cheeks.
"What are you up to this time, Nick? Aren't you supposed to be in the university?" Cristin raised an eyebrow as her husband puts his arms on her waist.
"Nothing. I just missed the little guy. I'll go back later at school. I want to drop by and see my nephews. I just came from Howie's and Adrienne kicked me out when little David kept on crying when I ate his food." Nick walked past the couple and to the crib where the little Scott is, playing with a Winnie the Pooh toy. It's been a year since everything that has happened. Princess Monique was exiled to Seychelles where she'd live in a monastery. Howie and Adrienne were married and had their own little bundle of joy as well, a boy he named David. Alex is graduating from the university with the recognition of excellence in the arts and music. Nick is on his first year in the university where he took up Fine Arts. Anastasia and Giselle now live in peace with Michaela in Theo. And for the King Benedique and Queen Isabella, they are still the ruling sovereigns. Kevin asked for five more years before he'd be ready to succeed his father on the throne.
"Howie is laughing like a mad man when we left." Nick added. "I'm hurt. Nobody wants me around their kid."
The couple ignored the young blonde. "I'm asking the little guy to sleep but he won't sleep," Cristin told Kevin. Her husband smiled and kissed her lips.
"He'll sleep when he wants to." Kevin said.
"Yeah. I can see that he'll be just as stubborn like his father." Nick added as he tried to snatch the Pooh toy away from Scott. The one-year-old looked up at his uncle with a grin as he pulled back his toy with his own might. Nick chuckled, playing along with his nephew. Unexpectedly, Scott grabbed Nick's hand and bites it.
"Ow!" Nick let go of the toy to tend his hand. Scott giggled.
Cristin and Kevin laughed. "We forgot to tell you, Nicky, that the little guy is already a monster. He always wants to make sure that his teeth are working." Kevin said.
Nick turned to Scott and saw the kid sticks his tongue out to him. "You're a naughty kid!" He took Scott out from the crib and carried him off. "We'll just take some bonding time, Kev, Cris. I'm giving you all the time to make another baby. Ha-ha." Nick winked at them then went out of the room with a giggling Scott in his arms. "Oh, yes, little boy. I'm going to take my revenge. Just wait and see."
Kevin turned to his chuckling wife when Nick and Scott are out of the room. "That's quite a suggestion from Nick." He said as he pulled her to the adjacent door towards their room. They stopped in front of the armoire. Kevin opened it and took out a beige trench coat. "I hope this one is familiar to you." But Cristin only gave him a look of wonder. "This is the trench coat you've been looking at when I found you in London."
"Oh!" Cristin took the coat from him. "Thank you, Kevin. That's been so thoughtful of you."
"Yes, I am. And I could still remember how your soft body melded with mine, how sweet you are, how lovely you looked when you're naked, how wonderful to hear you screaming my name..." Kevin bents down to kiss his wife on the lips.
"Yes, Kevin. I remember that as well." Cristin said and returned the kiss with such passion and fervor. She thanked God for giving her the things she dreamed of in life: a loving husband, a wonderful son, and a life of forever with them.
